SK Hynix, the high-bandwidth memory and storage-chip producer, has secured AMD's backing for cooperation across multiple memory generations. Yet despite this endorsement, Seoul-traded shares closed 2.8% lower on October 7, with the stock's U.S. listing capturing a price of $179.55.

The backing strengthens SK Hynix's strategic position but leaves the valuation question unresolved. At current levels, the stock trades 39.23% above its GF Value of $128.96, suggesting that investors have already priced in substantial growth expectations.

AMD CEO Lisa Su expressed satisfaction with HBM4 performance and discussed expanding supply, noting that tight memory availability requires planning three to five years ahead. She met with SK Hynix chief Kwak Noh-jung during these discussions. However, the announcement disclosed no new purchase commitment, pricing terms, or production allocation details.

Positive customer feedback carries weight, but contracted revenue carries more. Extended planning horizons could help SK Hynix align factory investment with customer demand and maintain expensive capacity utilization. The challenge lies in timing: new plants and equipment require years to build, while accelerator demand, competing chip designs, and memory prices can shift rapidly. For investors, the AMD partnership becomes meaningful only when paired with firm order volumes, healthy margins, and disciplined capital spending. With a valuation premium already embedded in the stock price, execution must drive the investment narrative forward.
