In May, rumors began circulating that AMD might shift its next-generation 4nm semiconductor manufacturing to Samsung Foundry instead of TSMC. These claims were further fueled earlier in the month when a report indicated that Samsung Foundry had received orders for 4nm semiconductors intended for data center applications, with industry speculation that AMD was the unnamed customer behind these orders.

However, AMD CEO Lisa Su has definitively denied these rumors. During a visit to Taiwan last week to meet with company partners and employees, Su fielded questions at a press conference about the alleged shift away from TSMC. When asked directly whether the rumors were true, Su responded skeptically, questioning whether the reporters really believed in Korean media outlets before categorically denying all claims that AMD was ditching TSMC in favor of Samsung Foundry for next-generation 4nm chips.

Su emphasized AMD's continued commitment to TSMC, highlighting the critical importance of the relationship for the company's future products. She noted that AMD's upcoming data center semiconductor, the MI300, would not have been possible without TSMC due to its "high complexity," implying that Samsung Foundry lacks the capability to manufacture such advanced chips. "We will continue to work with our Taiwanese partners because we cannot launch this product without good partners like TSMC," Su stated, underscoring that TSMC remains essential to AMD's operations. Su's remarks suggested that AMD could not afford to damage its relationship with TSMC in order to pursue competitive alternatives.
