Intel shares rose 5% after a new Street upgrade cited a server CPU shortage, while AMD and NVIDIA gained 3%.

Analysts citing a server CPU shortage in support of Intel's pricing suggest CPU supply, not only accelerators, is a bottleneck in AI data-center buildouts.

A Wall Street analyst has upgraded Intel (NASDAQ: INTC) to Buy days before its earnings report, citing a server CPU shortage that could last for years. Whether the chip giant can deliver enough silicon to prove that thesis right is the open question.

An upgrade built on a shortage of server central processing unit (CPU) capacity has pushed Intel to the front of the chip group. Intel stock is at $91.36, up 5% in the session, the strongest gain among semiconductor names.

Advanced Micro Devices (NASDAQ: AMD) stock is at $532.26, up 3%, following Intel higher at a slower pace. NVIDIA (NASDAQ: NVDA) shares are trading at $216.29, also up 3%, keeping pace with AMD while trailing Intel. The gap between Intel and its two largest rivals suggests a stock-specific catalyst at work.

Chip-focused funds are running ahead of the broader technology market. The iShares Semiconductor ETF (NASDAQ: SOXX) is at $496.02, up 4%, a stronger showing than either AMD or NVIDIA. By comparison, the Invesco QQQ Trust (NASDAQ: QQQ) is at $714.41, up 1%, a much smaller gain for the large-cap technology benchmark.

**Server CPU Shortage Drives New Street's Buy Call on Intel**

New Street Research analyst Pierre Ferragu upgraded Intel to Buy from Neutral and set a $125 price target. Ferragu wrote, "Agentic AI is driving a sustained increase in server CPU demand, with supply constraints set to persist for years, while Intel is getting rid of bad nodes and adding capacity." His argument pairs a durable demand thesis with a manufacturing cleanup, and Intel's shares are responding to both.

Stronger demand for Intel's own chips also supports utilization at its foundry business, according to Ferragu. Foundry loading matters to Intel because idle plants are expensive, so steady demand for its own server products can help keep those lines running.

**Intel's Factory Model Sets It Apart From AMD and NVIDIA**

AMD and NVIDIA both design chips and rely on outside manufacturers, a lighter model that leaves heavy factory spending to their suppliers. Intel designs and manufactures its own processors and runs a foundry business that builds silicon for outside customers, which ties its results more closely to how well its plants perform. Competition also runs directly between Intel and AMD, which goes head to head with Intel in server and PC processors.

In AI accelerators, NVIDIA holds the lead, placing it in a market adjacent to the server CPU business at the center of the New Street call. That position links NVIDIA to accelerator spending across the broader AI expansion. (We pulled together seven suppliers behind that expansion, from power to cooling, in a free report.)

For Intel, the optimistic view rests on Ferragu's belief that tight supply could last for years while the company retires older nodes and adds capacity. Building that capacity is costly, however, and a shortage only pays off if Intel can produce enough chips to meet demand.

**What New Street's Upgrade Signals for Intel's Coming Report**

Intel reports third-quarter 2026 results later this week, and the release now carries the added weight of a fresh Buy rating. The central question is whether data center demand is holding up, since Ferragu's thesis depends on server CPU orders staying strong and supply remaining tight. A weak data center report could challenge the upgrade, while steady demand could support the view that the shortage has staying power.

Shareholders can watch whether Intel's commentary on server supply matches Ferragu's view that the constraints will persist. Movement in the iShares Semiconductor ETF relative to the Invesco QQQ Trust may show whether chip stocks can hold their lead over the broader technology group.

Upgrades that land days before an earnings report can fade quickly if results disappoint, which makes the coming release the real test for Intel shares. Investors may want to keep their exposure smaller until the earnings question is settled.
