IREN Limited is shifting from Bitcoin mining toward cloud computing for artificial intelligence, a transformation centered on securing power, building data centers, installing GPUs, and delivering computing capacity to customers. Its fastest-growing business is AI Cloud, now the true investment thesis. Unlike software-focused competitors like CoreWeave or Nebius, IREN emphasizes physical execution: securing land and power, constructing and connecting data centers, and preparing them for customers.
In the third quarter of fiscal 2026, revenue declined to $144.8 million from $184.7 million in the previous quarter, adjusted EBITDA fell to $59.5 million from $75.3 million, and the company posted a net loss of $247.8 million. This decline reflects a shrinking mining business; investors are betting instead on IREN converting AI contracts into a larger infrastructure operation.
The bullish thesis rests on the premise that power and ready-to-use computing capacity are becoming more valuable as AI demand grows. IREN can expand by bringing additional secured power online and installing more GPUs. Converting existing sites in British Columbia and Texas to air-cooled systems offers faster revenue generation than building entirely new liquid-cooled data centers. The financial shift supports this strategy: Bitcoin mining revenue fell to $111.2 million from $167.4 million as older hardware was retired, while AI Cloud revenue nearly doubled to $33.6 million from $17.3 million.
Management's 2026 targets are ambitious: 480 megawatts of AI Cloud capacity, 150,000 GPUs, and $3.7 billion in annual recurring revenue by year-end. Secured power has reached 5 gigawatts, with new sites planned in Europe and Asia Pacific. The Childress site's first phase, Horizon 1, is scheduled to transfer to Microsoft in the third quarter, with three additional phases planned by year-end. About 3,000 workers are currently on site, indicating construction scale. If these projects remain on schedule, bulls expect rapid growth toward a substantially larger AI Cloud business. The fact that all current capacity is already booked suggests IREN is supply-constrained, not demand-limited.
This view is reinforced by IREN's five-year, $3.4 billion AI Cloud contract with NVIDIA, expected to generate approximately $700 million annually and covering 60 megawatts of Blackwell chip capacity at Childress. NVIDIA has committed to investing up to $2.1 billion, disbursed gradually as infrastructure is built and fully invested once IREN deploys 600,000 GPUs. Microsoft remains IREN's most important customer; about 95% of GPU purchase funding is expected to come from customer prepayments and equipment financing rather than IREN's own capital. Given that substantial future revenue depends on these commitments, investors will scrutinize whether IREN can build and deliver on schedule—delays would jeopardize 2026 targets.
The largest risks stem from construction cost and complexity. Even with strong AI demand, IREN must build, connect, and hand over each site before generating revenue, a process not yet complete. The $247.8 million quarterly net loss was largely driven by $140.4 million in non-cash write-downs and $23.7 million in unrealized losses tied to financial hedges.
AI Cloud's rapid growth alongside declining overall revenue and profit demonstrates that this new business is not yet large enough to offset mining's decline. IREN is also heavily dependent on a small number of large customers while integrating two recent acquisitions, Mirantis and Nostrum. Such rapid expansion exposes the company to construction delays, rising borrowing costs, integration challenges, or customer handover issues.
Hedge fund positioning sends mixed signals. Fifty-three hedge funds held IREN at the end of the first quarter, up from 46 the previous quarter—an increase suggesting institutional confidence in IREN's power position and long-term AI opportunity, despite lingering concerns about funding and execution. In comparison, Core Scientific held 81 hedge funds (up from 76), Applied Digital held 39 (down from 40), and Hut 8 held 60 (down from 64). IREN saw the strongest rise in hedge fund interest among peers this quarter, while Core Scientific remained the most widely held stock in the group, and Applied Digital and Hut 8 interest declined slightly.
Short interest data present a more cautious view. Approximately 27.09% of IREN's available shares are sold short—the highest in the peer group, ahead of Applied Digital at 26.33%, Core Scientific at 22.43%, and Hut 8 at 11.58%. Despite rising hedge fund ownership, significant investor skepticism persists, reflecting genuine concerns about heavy spending, reliance on a few major customers, and the ability to deliver new sites on schedule without financing constraints.
The bullish case hinges on clear milestones: Horizon 1 delivering to Microsoft on schedule in the third quarter, subsequent phases progressing through year-end, AI Cloud revenue continuing to expand, and GPU financing limiting shareholder dilution. The critical question for investors is whether IREN can convert secured power, planned AI Cloud capacity, GPU targets, and revenue goals into real earnings and cash flow quickly enough to prove that execution—not opportunity—is the real challenge ahead.
