Broadcom's AI networking chip business faces headwinds from China export controls; GPU cloud provider CoreWeave reports constraints on scaling custom silicon deployments.
Broadcom is positioning itself as a prime long-term beneficiary of the AI boom as hyperscalers shift from Nvidia GPUs toward custom accelerators. The company reported $29.6 billion in revenue for its latest quarter—up 86% year over year—along with nearly $14 billion in free cash flow. Management has guided next-quarter sales to $34.8 billion, with roughly $22 billion tied to AI.
Strategic partnerships underscore Broadcom's expanding role in custom silicon. Google's TPUs, developed in collaboration with Anthropic and Broadcom, could reach up to 5 GW of capacity, while Meta and other tech giants pursue similar bespoke chips. CEO Hock Tan has projected more than $100 billion in AI revenue for 2027. The Value Portfolio rates Broadcom a Strong Buy, citing its mix of AI, networking, and acquisitions as a "valuable long-term investment opportunity."
Broadcom's AI semiconductor revenue jumped 221% year over year to $16.7 billion in Q3 FY26, demonstrating robust demand for its custom chips and networking solutions. Analysts currently assign AVGO a Strong Buy rating with average price targets implying more than 42% upside.
However, Broadcom faces a potential geopolitical headwind. China is reviewing the use of Broadcom switches in state-backed data centers as part of its broader push to reduce reliance on foreign technology and build a self-sufficient AI supply chain. Any shift to domestic hardware could prove material: Asia-Pacific delivered more than half of Broadcom's revenue in FY2025.
CoreWeave presents a counterpoint. While the AI data-center operator boasts over 1.5 GW of active power and a revenue backlog above $100 billion, converting that pipeline into cash demands substantial capital—$9.4 billion recently deployed and roughly $38 billion planned for 2026. Despite 112% revenue growth to $2.6 billion, operating margins sit near 5%, and a $2.6 billion loan priced above 9% underscores financing stress. CoreWeave is also heavily exposed to Nvidia GPUs at a time when customers are increasingly cost-conscious and exploring custom silicon from Google and Amazon. The Value Portfolio sees no durable competitive edge and assigns CoreWeave a Strong Sell rating, though Wall Street maintains a more optimistic Moderate Buy consensus with a $139.38 average price target implying 60% upside.
