Intel becomes a full member of South Korea's AI and Robot Industry Association to accelerate sales of its edge AI chips in the Korean market.

Intel Korea has applied for full membership in the Korea AI Robot Industry Association, marking a strategic expansion into South Korea’s robotics ecosystem. The association, which serves as South Korea’s largest private robotics organization, is chaired by Samsung Electronics and currently comprises 415 member companies. Intel’s application represents only the second time a global technology giant’s Korean subsidiary has joined, following Qualcomm Korea. The move is widely interpreted as part of Intel’s broader strategy to accelerate sales of its edge AI chips.

According to industry sources, Intel Korea submitted its full membership application recently and is currently undergoing review. Established in 2003, the association lists Samsung Electronics (005930.KS) as its chair company, with Oh Jun-ho, head of Samsung’s Future Robotics Division, serving as chairman. Its membership roster spans major conglomerates such as Hyundai Motor (005380.KS) and LG Electronics (066570.KS), alongside small and mid-sized innovators including Rainbow Robotics (277810.KQ) and Girobot. Meanwhile, Qualcomm Korea is reportedly seeking promotion to executive member status.

Intel’s entry aligns with its strategic pivot from a traditional CPU manufacturer toward capturing growth in the edge AI chip segment. Autonomous robots require processing units capable of running complex AI models without relying on external internet connectivity. At Computex 2026 in Taiwan this June, Intel announced that its Core Ultra Series 3 CPU had already been deployed in more than 130 edge AI applications.

“Intel's association membership and Qualcomm's promotion to executive member are extensions of their domestic sales activities,” said a robotics industry insider. “They likely harbor expectations of expanding product sales going forward.”

Intel is not alone in deepening its ties with South Korea’s robotics sector. Nvidia will launch a six-month humanoid robot AI development training program in Seoul starting in October. The curriculum covers humanoid robot AI model development, with South Korean startup XYZ participating. XYZ’s semi-humanoid robot, Deuce, will serve as a hands-on training platform, marking both the first time Nvidia has partnered with a South Korean robotics company on an educational initiative and the first time a domestically produced humanoid robot has been used in an Nvidia training program. The course centers on Nvidia’s Jetson edge AI chip and its Isaac Sim robot simulation platform, a strategic effort to cultivate developers proficient in Nvidia’s ecosystem ahead of broader market adoption.

Qualcomm is simultaneously advancing technology collaborations with small and medium-sized enterprises. It is participating as a demand-side partner in the Ministry of SMEs and Startups’ “Everyone’s Challenge” program, co-developing AI robot control computers and autonomous mobile robots (AMRs) equipped with these systems alongside Yujin System.

The intensified focus from global tech leaders on South Korea’s robotics industry stems from clear commercial fundamentals. From large manufacturers to agile startups, companies producing robots or retrofitting existing platforms for specialized tasks are thriving. Because each robot requires dedicated AI processing power, the sector’s rapid expansion directly translates into heightened demand for edge AI chips.

This particular market segment remains highly fragmented. According to market research firm Global Market Insights, Nvidia—the leader in edge AI chips as of 2024—held just 11.2% market share, with Qualcomm trailing closely at 9.7%. Consequently, big tech companies’ efforts to embed themselves within South Korea’s robotics ecosystem are fundamentally competitive maneuvers aimed at securing dominance in this nascent but rapidly growing space.

Kwon Oh-hyung, CEO of deep tech investment firm FuturePlay, highlighted South Korea’s structural advantages: “As a traditional manufacturing powerhouse, South Korea can accumulate world-class validation experience simply by leveraging the industrial sites of its major corporations as robot testbeds. South Korea's strength lies in having secured an excellent value chain across the entire robotics industry, from components to AI models.”
