ChangXin Memory Technologies, the Hefei-based chipmaker known as CXMT, announced on Saturday that its fifth-generation DRAM technology platform has entered mass production — a milestone that places its process within reach of the world's most advanced memory fabs.

The announcement came at the World Manufacturing Convention in Anhui, where the company described an innovative four-exposure lithography technique that has shrunk the active-area half-pitch of its memory array to 11.95 nanometres — "approaching the world's most advanced memory production platforms," according to CXMT. The platform also increases die output per wafer by more than 50% over the previous generation, while improving density, power draw, and cost control. Alongside the platform, CXMT showed off large-capacity LPDDR5X chips built on it — the class of memory that smartphones and AI servers consume by the metric ton.

The milestone extends beyond the manufacturing floor. DRAM prices have climbed worldwide, a squeeze that began as Samsung, SK Hynix, and Micron shifted capacity toward high-bandwidth memory for AI servers and away from conventional DRAM. The shortage fed straight into consumer prices — Huawei, Xiaomi, and Honor all raised phone prices last month as memory costs bit, and Xiaomi's CEO publicly blamed "expensive memory" when pricing its new foldable. A fifth Chinese entrant at the cutting edge revises the competitive picture in a market three companies have dominated for decades. The announcement reflects a broader industrial push, including DeepSeek's recent order for 160,000 domestic AI chips valued at $2.56 billion.

The venue was no accident. The World Manufacturing Convention had just hosted top-level directives on manufacturing that made headlines — the government's message that industrial technology is the country's foundation, now with a concrete exhibit to point at.

Chinese media and social platforms embraced the announcement. Baidu's trending board featured the launch as a "fifth-generation technology platform in mass production," while Caixin highlighted improvements in storage density, power draw, and cost control. On Weibo, a popular post framed the achievement plainly: a half-pitch of 11.95 nanometres "has reached the world's advanced level."

The commercial stakes are substantial. CXMT's parent company listed on Shanghai's STAR Market in July and rapidly became the exchange's most valuable company by market capitalization. In June, Reuters reported a supply agreement exceeding 20 billion yuan between CXMT and Tencent for server DRAM. The competitive and commercial importance of the fifth-generation platform is correspondingly large.

One caution deserves emphasis: announcing mass production of a technology platform and shipping in volume at yield are different milestones, and Chinese chip announcements have blurred that line before. The test will come in the market, in phones and servers, where CXMT's LPDDR5X will compete directly with the Korean and American incumbents on price and yield.
