Micron Technology shares are attempting to recover after heavy selling pressure in July pushed the stock below $800. The sharp decline reflected mounting concerns, including a significant CEO share sale, rising competition from China, and growing uncertainty about the sustainability of AI-related spending. The stock has rebounded strongly in recent sessions, gaining nearly 8% and testing the $900 level, though several technical resistance zones remain before any sustained uptrend can be confirmed.

High Bandwidth Memory (HBM) demand remains one of Micron's strongest fundamental drivers. Recent results from Microsoft, Google, and Palantir demonstrate that cloud providers and enterprises continue investing heavily in AI infrastructure, with increasingly sophisticated computing systems requiring substantial quantities of advanced memory. If hyperscalers maintain their data-center expansion, Micron could benefit from stronger volumes and potentially higher margins.

The broader DRAM and NAND markets have also shown improvement. Memory manufacturers reduced capital expenditure and production during weaker demand periods, helping tighten supply. This supply discipline has contributed to firmer average selling prices and improved profitability—a dynamic that could support Micron as HBM demand strengthens alongside traditional memory markets.

However, the recovery remains uneven. Personal computer and smartphone demand has been less impressive, leaving Micron dependent on sustained strength in data centers and advanced computing. That vulnerability intensified following CEO Sanjay Mehrotra's sale of over 40,000 shares on July 24 in transactions worth approximately $37.3 million. While the sales were conducted under a Rule 10b5-1 pre-arranged trading plan and showed no indication of material non-public information, the transaction attracted investor attention amid already heightened semiconductor valuation concerns.

Technically, Micron's recent action reflects a pattern of vulnerability. The stock fell from resistance near $1,000 (where the 20-day simple moving average now sits) to $800 lows two weeks ago, from which it has rebounded. Buyers are now testing $900 and the 20 SMA, but sustained momentum above these levels will be necessary to confirm the broader uptrend.

China's rapidly developing memory industry presents another significant challenge. ChangXin Memory Technologies (CXMT) is expanding DRAM production capacity as China seeks to reduce dependence on foreign semiconductor suppliers. Reports of Apple testing CXMT memory products for Chinese devices add to competitive uncertainty. While immediate disruption is unlikely, stronger Chinese technology and expanded production could eventually pressure global prices and margins.

Micron's recovery also hinges on the sustainability of AI infrastructure spending. The assumption that increasingly sophisticated models require enormous computing resources may not hold if more efficient AI models emerge. If hyperscalers can achieve similar performance with fewer resources, memory demand growth could moderate significantly—particularly if hyperscalers demand higher returns on their massive infrastructure investments.

Micron is expanding manufacturing capacity across the United States, including major projects in New York, Idaho, and Virginia, betting on AI infrastructure and hyperscale data centers to drive memory demand for years. The problem is that competitors are making identical assumptions. Aggressive capacity expansion by multiple manufacturers simultaneously could eventually produce oversupply, and the memory industry has historically demonstrated how quickly strong pricing reverses when excess capacity enters the market.

The rebound toward $900 shows that buyers are returning after July's selloff, supported by strong HBM demand, firmer memory pricing, and continued AI infrastructure investment. However, the recovery remains vulnerable: China's expanding memory industry increases competitive pressure; more efficient AI models could moderate hardware demand; and Micron's aggressive capacity expansion creates oversupply risk. Technically, the stock must clear several resistance zones above $900 for the broader uptrend to be considered firmly restored. For now, the rebound is constructive, but sustained buying pressure through key resistance levels would be needed before confirming that the July correction has fully ended.
