Memory shortages may intensify in 2027, with industry reports indicating that SK Hynix, Samsung, and Micron have already sold out their full 2027 DRAM and HBM memory capacity months ahead of schedule. With AI servers and HBM soaking up nearly 70 percent of DRAM output, smartphone and PC makers are left competing for remaining inventory. Buyers are reportedly locking in supply through advance deposits, though most are only securing 60 to 70 percent of their originally requested quantities. The major vendors are signing multi-year long-term agreements spanning three to five years with key clients, a shift attributed to the supply chaos of 2026 that prompted manufacturers to finalize 2027 capacity earlier. ADATA Chairman Simon Chen has publicly confirmed that the top three DRAM vendors' 2027 capacity is already sold out, with consumer electronics bearing the brunt of tighter supply. NAND capacity from Samsung, Micron, and SanDisk for 2027 is also already presold, with Kioxia and SK Hynix expected to finalize bookings by the end of August 2026.

Samsung has reclaimed leadership in the Q2 2026 global DRAM market with a 39% market share, marking its strongest position since 2024. According to Counterpoint Research, this represents a sharp reversal from a year earlier when SK Hynix held the top position. Samsung's recovery was driven by strong demand and price increases in conventional DRAM, along with growing momentum in HBM sales. SK Hynix, despite posting a 214% year-over-year jump in quarterly revenue, saw its market share drop from 39% in Q2 2025 to 26% currently. Micron claimed 25% market share and is closing the gap with SK Hynix's second-place position, with DRAM revenue reportedly growing fivefold since Q2 2025. Industry analysts suggest Micron is now a genuine contender for the number two position, contingent on sufficient capacity to support demand. Beyond the major three, CXMT and Nanya delivered exceptional growth, up 716% and 690% year-over-year respectively. Conventional DRAM prices surged quarter over quarter, while HBM pricing actually declined year-over-year due to softening HBM3E prices and delays in HBM4 rollout. HBM4 shipments are already accelerating in Q3 2026 as NVIDIA's Vera Rubin and AMD's Instinct MI455X platforms begin shipping, which should help stabilize HBM pricing.

Prime Video and Samsung announced that HDR10+ ADVANCED, the next-generation HDR format, will begin rolling out globally on Prime Video starting August 2026, with Samsung's 2026 TV lineup being the first hardware to support it. The new standard introduces two key features: Enhanced Overall Brightness, which uses extended statistical metadata to maximize a TV's peak brightness capabilities for more impactful highlights without detail loss, and Intelligent Motion Smoothing, which enables compatible televisions to dynamically adjust motion processing to maintain cinematic appearance during movies while smoothing content for fast-paced sports or action sequences. HDR10+ ADVANCED support begins with Samsung 2026 TVs, with future models expected to follow as adoption spreads throughout the ecosystem. This collaboration builds on Samsung and Prime Video's history, dating back to December 2017 when Prime Video became the first streaming platform to support the original HDR10+ standard. Since that 2017 launch, HDR10+ adoption has expanded substantially, now comprising 183 adopter companies and over 22,000 certified products worldwide. Samsung VD Business EVP Taeyong Son framed the announcement as a continuation of that legacy, while Prime Video's BA Winston called it a meaningful advancement in delivering richer visuals to subscribers.

Samsung's Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra, Z Fold 8, and Z Flip 8 have set a new pre-order record in South Korean smartphone history, with 1.44 million units reserved during a one-week window from July 28 to August 3. This surpasses the previous national record held by the Galaxy Note 10 in 2019, which achieved 1.38 million pre-orders over an 11-day period. The Z8 series also exceeded the Galaxy S26 series' 1.35 million pre-orders and more than doubled last year's combined Z Fold 7 and Z Flip 7 total of 1.04 million units. The Galaxy Z Fold 8 alone accounted for approximately 70 percent of total pre-orders. Americans are keeping their smartphones longer before purchasing replacements, with average replacement cycles now extending to nearly four years. According to device insurance company Assurant, iPhone users retained their phones for an average of 3.8 years last year, up from 3.67 years previously, while Android users extended their average replacement time from 3.52 years to 3.96 years. This shift reflects improved device durability and higher price points that discourage frequent upgrades. Modern smartphones released three or four years ago remain fully capable for everyday tasks including calling, messaging, video streaming, photography, and application use, reducing consumer motivation to purchase new devices. The extended replacement cycle is impacting mobile carriers; Verizon reported handset equipment revenue fell more than 20% in the second quarter compared to the prior year period, attributing the decline to fewer customer upgrades. This trend extends globally, with South Korean consumers now replacing smartphones after approximately two years and nine months on average.
