DataSpots, the data-center division of Grupo ON, has secured 650 MW of approved grid-access capacity across eight projects in Brazil.

The portfolio spans five states: São Paulo (Alfa in Atibaia, 50 MW), Rio de Janeiro (Newton, Adria, and Jasper, 250 MW), Paraná (Bricklin and Polaris, 200 MW), Santa Catarina (Johnson in Joinville, 100 MW), and Rio Grande do Sul (Scharlau, 50 MW). According to the company, all eight projects have received favorable access rulings.

Eight transmission connection contracts (CCTs), executed with transmission utilities and ONS as an intervening party, and seven of eight distribution-system usage contracts (CUSDs) have been signed, with the remainder being formalized. “Our strategy starts with the electrical connection and organizes land development around those points,” Ortega said in a statement.

The approvals follow Brazil’s existing Basic Grid framework, placing DataSpots on a different track from the competitive access seasons introduced under the PNAST regime. Established by Decree 12.772/2025, PNAST replaced the previous first-come, first-served queue with periodic windows managed by ONS. Under the updated rules, new requests require financial guarantees and, when demand exceeds available capacity, a competitive bidding process where winning applicants pay a premium.

The financial guarantee required prior to signing a transmission-system usage contract (CUST) equals 40 times the monthly transmission-usage charge. Based on a simulation using a R$12.50/kW monthly rate, Ortega noted the guarantee would total R$325 million for DataSpots’ 650 MW portfolio, excluding other applicable requirements. He added that such amounts could tie up credit capacity and necessitate additional guarantees.

DataSpots’ portfolio documentation is well advanced under the current framework, allowing the company to proceed independently of PNAST’s upcoming seasonal competitions. The firm is simultaneously managing environmental preparation and municipal permitting for the sites. Headquartered in Curitiba, DataSpots was founded in 2023 as a Grupo ON unit focused on identifying and developing data-center locations across Brazil. It leverages Datlaz, Grupo ON’s proprietary platform containing more than 8 billion data points on substations, fiber-optic networks, submarine cables, and transmission lines, which cross-references information to pinpoint sites with available grid capacity.

As reported by BNamericas in September 2025, the company had filed requests totaling 1,600 MW with ONS, with a project pipeline then estimated at US$16.6 billion (R$92 billion). Grupo ON, whose partners are Ortega and Roberto Navarro, comprises seven energy-sector companies, including OnFlow for technical studies and Ambios for environmental permitting.

The upcoming ReData bill, which outlines benefits for data-center equipment, should further support the company’s initiatives. Approved by the lower house and the Senate on September 1, the legislation now awaits presidential signature. “ReData strengthens the investment environment,” Ortega said. “Our job is to build the concrete conditions to receive that investment, with approved grid access and projects advancing to the Ready to Build stage.”
