A bipartisan group of US senators has reached an agreement to speed federal approval of pipelines, power lines, and other major infrastructure projects while requiring protections against electricity price hikes driven by power-hungry AI data centers.

The 417-page bill includes language requiring data center developers to pay for the costs of building high-voltage electric lines, generation and distribution infrastructure, and related expenses, rather than allowing these costs to be passed on to consumers. The measure would also mandate that data centers report their energy use to the federal Energy Information Administration.
