Nvidia is investing a "substantial" sum into Safe Superintelligence (SSI), the AI lab founded by Ilya Sutskever, OpenAI's former chief scientist. The companies announced the partnership on Monday but did not disclose the exact amount.
Under the long-term agreement, SSI will gain access to Nvidia's next-generation Vera Rubin GPU platform, which the companies say will increase its compute capacity tenfold. The lab has previously relied primarily on Google's TPU chips, according to the Wall Street Journal. The partnership also positions Nvidia to compete with Google as a chip supplier amid the current AI expansion.
Sutskever described the research as focused on "overlooked aspects of how the human brain functions." SSI was established in 2024 with a single objective: a "straight-shot" sprint toward safe superintelligence. The company has raised approximately $2 billion from Andreessen Horowitz, Sequoia Capital, DST Global, and Greenoaks, and was most recently valued at around $30 billion.
