French energy firm Haffner Energy has launched a modular, biomass-based power-and-cooling solution tailored for the data center sector. Built on its CORE100 platform and featuring a new multi-module variant designated C-iB, the system is engineered to deliver localized, decarbonized power with guaranteed availability. In addition to supplying cooling services and reducing on-site water consumption, the technology scales into the tens of megawatts and beyond. It enables data centers to expand computing capacity without awaiting grid infrastructure upgrades, operating in parallel with existing grid connections to significantly reduce a facility’s reliance on external power.
The system runs on residual biomass, which Haffner noted can be stockpiled on-site or in nearby facilities for several weeks. The technology accommodates multiple feedstock types, including forestry and agricultural residues, allowing individual projects to diversify their supply chains. Each installation is delivered as a ten-module configuration, incorporating two redundant units and limited natural gas backup. The C-iB module was specifically designed for these multi-module deployments. The process also co-produces biochar, establishing a pathway for biogenic carbon removal.
Highlighting the commercial advantages, Philippe Haffner, chairman and CEO of Haffner Energy, said: “A single project can call for more than ten modules, with each module integrated into a full-service data center offering generating about €6m ($6.98m) in revenue – nearly three times what a module used solely for syngas production would bring in.” He added: “That additional revenue doesn't require a proportional increase in our industrial capacity, since some of the complementary equipment is supplied by specialized partners.”
Headquartered in Vitry-le-François, France, Haffner Energy is a founding member of ÆTHER, a European consortium currently bidding for the European Commission’s “AI Gigafactory” tender. The group plans to develop an AI gigafactory in the Strasbourg region of France.
