AWS plans 36-building data-center megacampus in Indiana County, Pennsylvania (Homer City Energy Campus site).
Amazon Web Services has filed a Preliminary Land Development Plan for a 36-building data center campus in Homer City, Pennsylvania, located at the Homer City Energy Campus approximately 50 miles east of Pittsburgh. The company first expressed interest in the project in early August following discussions with Homer City Redevelopment.
The campus will span 1,100 acres across Center and Blacklick Townships in Indiana County, encompassing six sites: Bruner, Helen, Green, West, Harvey/Gaston, and Rura. Each of the 36 planned data center buildings will stand two stories at 70 feet tall with 225,000 square feet of floor space. The project also includes ancillary office and storage facilities, electrical substation infrastructure, security features, and redundant electrical generation capacity.
Construction will proceed in four phases beginning in December 2026, with the final phase commencing in January 2032. Full completion is targeted for June 2036. Knighthead Capital Management is financing the project.
The campus will be powered by a 4.5GW natural gas generation facility being constructed by Homer City Redevelopment. The site previously housed the Homer City Generating Station, a 2GW coal plant that operated from 1969 to 2023 and was Pennsylvania's largest coal-fired power station. The new gas facility, announced last year with data centers designated as a primary customer, will dedicate most of its output to the campus while injecting more than 1GW back into the grid.
Once operational, the project is expected to generate 1,500 to 2,000 jobs with average salaries between $80,000 and $100,000. AWS has committed to a community benefits agreement to mitigate community impacts and ensure local benefits.
AWS is also advancing data center development in Salem Township, where it acquired an existing facility from Talen Energy and approximately 1,200 adjacent acres near Talen's nuclear power plant, with plans for up to 15 buildings. The company is exploring additional sites in Falls and Kline Townships. Amazon has pledged $20 billion in total investment across multiple Pennsylvania campuses.
Earlier this month, AWS announced it would drop non-disclosure agreements for data center projects and committed an additional $1 billion in community investments nationwide.
