Oracle has issued a request for proposals seeking to deploy 2 GW of new renewable energy projects across New Mexico. The RFP solicits solar, wind, geothermal, and other renewable energy technologies capable of delivery between 2027 and 2031, with Oracle prioritizing projects that can accelerate timeline delivery.

Proposals will be evaluated on capacity and growth potential, expected delivery timing, project maturity, technical viability, and ability to support Oracle's long-term energy commitments. Oracle aims to generate sufficient carbon-free energy to offset the company's power consumption and emissions across the region.

The move is tied directly to Project Jupiter, Oracle's $165 billion AI data center campus under construction in southern New Mexico. Mahesh Thiagarajan, Oracle's executive vice president of cloud infrastructure, stated: "New Mexico has an extraordinary opportunity to grow its renewable energy resources and create lasting value for communities across the state and Oracle wants to help accelerate that growth." Project Jupiter is committed to achieving 100% carbon-free energy matching by 2031, replacing traditional gas turbines and diesel generators with fuel cell technology instead.

Fuel cells generate electricity through an electrochemical process, converting fuels such as hydrogen or natural gas with zero direct emissions. Bloom Energy is supplying up to 2.45 GW of fuel cell capacity for the Project Jupiter site. "Bloom's fuel cell technology enables us to deliver highly reliable on-site power with a lower environmental footprint—supporting the project's performance needs while contributing to stronger environmental outcomes," Thiagarajan said.

Oracle plans to spend approximately $50 billion this year alone on AI and computing infrastructure, with additional investments planned throughout the decade. The company expects Project Jupiter to generate billions of dollars in long-term economic impact to Doña Ana County and New Mexico.

Market research firm McKinsey & Co. forecasts that global data center investment needs could reach $6.7 trillion to maintain computing capacity, with more than 40% of that spending concentrated in the United States. The push to achieve 220 GW of capacity by 2030 reflects surging demand for AI workloads, though companies face mounting regulatory pressure to meet strict environmental emission thresholds.
