미국 국토안보부는 연방 민간 기관이 중국 연구소 DeepSeek의 AI 기술을 사용하는 것을 금지했다.
The US Department of Homeland Security has banned federal civilian agencies from using AI technology from the Chinese lab Deepseek. Agencies must remove existing Deepseek products from their IT systems and may not buy new ones, the Wall Street Journal reports.
The order also covers products from affiliated companies and third-party services built with Deepseek implementations. However, it is unclear what "built with" means in practice, or whether AI gateways such as OpenRouter fall under the ban. The department did not set a deadline or name any specific security concerns. The order is based on a 2018 US law covering supply chain security in federal procurement, but the notice does not say which security concerns led to the decision or when agencies must complete the removal.
The action follows broader discussions in Washington. Over the summer, the US government considered steps against Chinese open-weight models, according to the New York Times. The options included sanctions, a trade blacklist, and rules on which models federal agencies may use. The push came after a wave of powerful Chinese models, such as Kimi K3 from Moonshot AI. The government has pulled back for now after Nvidia, Microsoft, Google, and Meta objected, while OpenAI and Anthropic had lobbied for restrictions.
