Nvidia is in preliminary talks with South Korean AI chip designer Rebellions regarding a potential technology partnership, direct investment, or acquisition, according to Bloomberg citing people familiar with the discussions. The negotiations follow intensifying competition over AI inference chips, as major technology companies seek more efficient, lower-cost solutions for running AI models. This week, Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang met with Rebellions co-founder and CEO Sung Hyun Park at Nvidia’s headquarters in Santa Clara, California, to explore cooperation opportunities. The talks remain in early stages and may not result in a deal.

Founded in 2020, Rebellions specializes in neural processing chips for artificial intelligence, with a dedicated focus on inference—the phase that occurs after model training when systems deliver results to end users. Unlike training, which builds models, inference requires running them repeatedly at scale, making energy efficiency and low latency critical infrastructure priorities. Rebellions aims to develop chips that meet these demands for data centers, cloud providers, telecom operators, and organizations scaling AI applications.

Rebellions maintains a strategic investment relationship with Saudi Arabia through Wa’ed Ventures, the investment arm of Aramco. In July 2024, Wa’ed Ventures led a $15 million investment as part of a Series B extension round, marking the fund’s first investment in a South Korean startup. The capital was explicitly tied to Rebellions’ expansion plans in the Kingdom, with the company pledging to accelerate AI chip development, establish a subsidiary, and commence operations locally. Wa’ed Ventures categorizes Rebellions within its portfolio of global firms developing AI accelerators optimized for energy efficiency and scalable model deployment. Beyond financing, Rebellions signed a memorandum of understanding with Aramco in 2024 to deploy specialized computing processors in the company’s Saudi data centers. This initiative aims to bolster Aramco’s digital infrastructure and advance localized AI capabilities in line with national strategy. Rebellions’ chips have also entered markets including Saudi Arabia, Japan, and the United States as the firm expands its global footprint.

Driven by global investment inflows and surging demand for inference hardware, Rebellions’ valuation has climbed rapidly. In March 2026, the company secured $400 million in a pre-IPO funding round, pushing its valuation to approximately $2.3 billion. Cumulative funding since its founding now totals roughly $850 million. The round attracted a consortium of strategic investors including Samsung Ventures, SK Hynix, and Arm, alongside Wa’ed Ventures, blending semiconductor industry expertise with financial backing.

The discussions with Nvidia unfold amid shifting dynamics in the AI chip market. While Nvidia dominates training workloads, the inference segment is gaining prominence as models transition to widespread commercial deployment. Rebellions is positioning itself as a specialized alternative, engineering chips optimized for continuous, high-volume request processing. To address rising data center costs and growing AI service demand, the company designs hardware that balances performance with power consumption. Recently, Rebellions has expanded beyond discrete chips into integrated infrastructure solutions. Its product lineup includes RebelRack and RebelPod, engineered to facilitate inference deployment in data centers, alongside the Rebel platform, which targets large-scale AI workload execution. These offerings signal a strategic shift toward building a cohesive ecosystem spanning custom silicon, systems, and underlying infrastructure.

Current negotiations do not indicate a finalized acquisition decision. Bloomberg reports that Nvidia is evaluating multiple pathways, including a technology partnership, equity investment, or full acquisition, leaving the relationship structure undecided. An acquisition would present significant complexity given Nvidia’s market dominance, scale, and the likelihood of regulatory scrutiny in both the United States and South Korea. Meanwhile, South Korea treats semiconductors as a strategic sector, actively supporting domestic firms capable of competing globally. In March 2026, Rebellions received direct investment from the National Growth Fund as part of a broader initiative to cultivate local champions in the AI chip space, underscoring the company’s importance to Korea’s industrial policy.

Concurrently, Rebellions is preparing for a public listing. Following its recent pre-IPO round, CEO Sung-hyun Park has outlined plans for an independent listing as the company strengthens its presence in the U.S. and other international markets. This trajectory complicates any potential acquisition, as Rebellions now possesses substantial capital, a multi-billion-dollar valuation, and a clear roadmap for independence. Should the talks culminate in an acquisition, it would represent a significant consolidation in the AI infrastructure market, particularly given the projected growth of inference workloads. Alternatively, a partnership or investment could grant Nvidia access to Rebellions’ proprietary technologies without full integration, allowing the industry leader to diversify its capabilities while maintaining control over the infrastructure supply chain. All scenarios remain open as discussions stay in preliminary stages, with neither party having announced a definitive agreement.
