China institutes travel approval requirement for immediate family members of AI laboratory executives

Spouses and children of some senior Chinese AI and semiconductor executives must now seek government approval before traveling abroad, according to Bloomberg reporting. Government agencies have recently notified selected founders and company leaders, extending a condition that was previously reported for some workers' own overseas trips to their immediate family members.

Some executives at AI and semiconductor companies are being singled out because their work is considered especially important to national security. The government office responsible for approving such applications and the submission process for relatives remain unclear.

This family travel requirement follows an earlier Bloomberg report from May 2026 indicating that some top AI professionals at private companies needed approval for their own overseas travel. Family travel restrictions had previously been imposed on some university researchers and state-company executives, though the recent extension to families of AI and semiconductor sector leaders appears to mark an expansion of the policy.

The requirement for prior approval should be distinguished from a broader travel ban. Family members are required to obtain permission before taking trips, but they are not barred from traveling outright. A separate State Council regulation, effective September 15, permits China's commerce and other relevant State Council departments to prohibit a Chinese citizen from leaving when an export-control or technology-trade violation may endanger industrial or technological security.
