Qualcomm (QCOM) is reportedly in talks to acquire artificial intelligence chip startup Tenstorrent, with discussions centered on a valuation range between $8 billion and $10 billion. The negotiations remain ongoing, and the final terms could shift or the transaction could ultimately collapse. The potential deal underscores Qualcomm’s strategic push to solidify its footprint in AI and data center semiconductors, moving beyond its traditional smartphone processor dominance.

Tenstorrent, founded by veteran chip architect Jim Keller—who previously worked on Apple processors and Tesla’s Autopilot hardware—designs AI-focused processors that the company claims can execute certain workloads more efficiently than traditional GPU-based systems used by competitors like Nvidia (NVDA). According to The Information, Tenstorrent had previously explored raising capital at a valuation of approximately $3.2 billion, though it remains unclear whether that funding round was finalized. The startup has since secured over $1 billion from investors including Samsung Securities, Fidelity, AFW Partners, and Eclipse Ventures.

For Qualcomm, based in San Diego, the prospective acquisition would accelerate its diversification strategy, building on its recent $2.4 billion purchase of Alphawave Semi to bolster high-speed data transmission and compute capabilities. It is not yet known whether any final agreement would incorporate performance-based milestone payments, nor whether the transaction would be structured as an all-cash deal, a stock swap, or a hybrid arrangement.

The rumored acquisition reflects broader consolidation trends within the AI hardware sector. Major technology firms are increasingly acquiring or investing in specialized chip startups to accelerate in-house silicon development. Nvidia has recently secured large licensing agreements tied to AI chip efficiency, while Meta Platforms (META) has similarly pursued acquisitions to advance its custom silicon roadmap. Additionally, Bloomberg reported in May that Intel (INTL) had expressed early acquisition interest in Tenstorrent.

Beyond M&A activity, analysts are closely monitoring Qualcomm’s near-term catalysts. A few days ago, Wells Fargo upgraded its price target on QCOM to $230 from $160, implying nearly 5% upside from its most recent close, while maintaining an ‘Equal Weight’ rating ahead of the company’s Investor Day on June 24, according to TheFly. The bank identified Amazon Web Services (AWS)—Amazon.com, Inc.’s (AMZN) cloud division—as likely Qualcomm’s primary hyperscale ASIC partner, noting that AWS already offers the AI100 Ultra chip. Wells Fargo observed that pricing checks appear relatively strong compared to competing GPU offerings and viewed the upcoming Investor Day as a potential positive catalyst. However, the firm flagged a key risk: whether Qualcomm’s near-memory processing architecture can differentiate itself in a rapidly evolving AI semiconductor landscape.

Market reaction reflected the news, with QCOM shares closing regular trading up 4.29% on Monday before slipping 0.7% in after-hours trading. Over the past 12 months, the stock has gained more than 40%. On Stocktwits, retail sentiment for QCOM remains ‘neutral,’ unchanged over the past week, though message volume is classified as ‘high.’ During the same 30-day window, the platform’s watcher count for the ticker rose by 1.6%, while message volume surged 200%.

In related market commentary, Evercore ISI addressed speculation surrounding a potential SpaceX public listing, noting that “Dream Big FOMO” could drive the S&P 500 toward 9,000.
