The bullish thesis centers on the expanding needs of AI computing clusters. As these systems grow more complex, they demand custom chips, increased networking capacity, and faster interconnects—areas where Marvell can benefit across all three dimensions simultaneously. This opportunity expands both as more AI infrastructure is built and as each new system requires faster connections between processors, memory, and networking equipment. Data Center now represents roughly 76% of Marvell's total revenue, making it the primary driver of the company's accelerating growth rate rather than a single contributor among many.
Management has raised its long-term outlook substantially, increasing the fiscal 2027 revenue forecast by over $500 million and the fiscal 2028 forecast by approximately $1.5 billion, projecting $16.5 billion in fiscal 2028 revenue. The interconnect business is particularly noteworthy, with fiscal 2027 growth expected to exceed 70% year-over-year—indicating management's confidence in sustained demand beyond recent quarters. If AI customers continue building larger systems, Marvell should have several additional years of growth ahead across custom chips, networking, and interconnects. An expanded partnership with NVIDIA, covering silicon photonics, NVLink Fusion integration, and AI radio networking, provides further participation opportunities as the AI buildout continues.
Profitability metrics are improving. Gross margin expanded to 52%, up 190 basis points year-over-year, while free cash flow margin—measuring cash generation relative to revenue—rose to 20%, up 870 basis points. Operating income grew 25.4% year-over-year, demonstrating profitable growth despite heavy investments in AI infrastructure. However, operating margin slipped slightly to 14%, suggesting improvements haven't materialized evenly across all profitability measures. A significant concern remains at the bottom line. Though revenue is accelerating, that growth hasn't yet translated into stronger profits for shareholders. Net margin contracted to just 1%, down 800 basis points year-over-year, while earnings per share fell 80% to $0.04. Shares outstanding also rose 2% over the past year, introducing mild dilution alongside already-weak per-share profitability. Given the stock's premium valuation, stronger earnings growth will be essential to justify current prices.
Institutional positioning offers cautionary signals. Marvell Technology was held by 79 hedge fund portfolios at the end of Q1, down from 85 in the previous quarter. This decline occurred despite accelerating revenue growth, sustained Data Center demand, and management's raised long-term guidance—suggesting some institutional wariness despite improving fundamentals. In comparison, Broadcom Inc. was held by 173 hedge funds (down from 202), NVIDIA Corporation by 275 (up from 264), and QUALCOMM Incorporated by 71 (down from 78). NVIDIA was the only company in this group where hedge fund ownership increased; Marvell, Broadcom, and QUALCOMM all saw ownership decline despite continued enthusiasm for AI-related stocks.
Short interest data presents a mixed picture. Marvell's short float of 4.34% is the highest among these four companies, compared with 3.83% for QUALCOMM, 1.47% for Broadcom, and 1.39% for NVIDIA. This makes Marvell the most heavily shorted stock in the group, reflecting investor concern regarding its premium valuation, thin net margins, and declining earnings per share. While not extreme in isolation, this short interest notably exceeds that of its three larger semiconductor peers despite Marvell's arguably stronger growth outlook.
The bullish case remains contingent on sustained strong data center revenue, interconnect growth exceeding 70%, progress toward the raised fiscal 2028 revenue target, and improvement in gross margin, free cash flow, net margin, and earnings per share. The central question is whether Marvell can convert its custom silicon, networking, interconnect, and NVIDIA partnership opportunities into earnings growth rapidly enough to justify its premium valuation.
