Google is evaluating its first data center facility in New Mexico, marking the search giant’s potential entry into the state’s emerging compute market.

Google is considering a new data center development in New Mexico, announcing this week that it is “exploring a new data center project” in Lea County. Further details, including specific location and facility specifications, were not shared. “Though many details remain outstanding, we’re excited about the possibilities that exist in Lea County, and look forward to sharing more as the project progresses,” Google said.

Located in the southeastern corner of New Mexico along the Texas border, Lea County’s county seat is Lovington. This initiative would mark Google’s first self-built data center in the state, which already hosts projects from the company in neighboring Arizona and Texas.

New Mexico’s data center market remains relatively modest compared to those of Arizona and Texas, with activity largely concentrated around Albuquerque. The state currently hosts facilities operated by Stack, Meta, Csquare, and H5.
