Egyptian conglomerate Intro Group plans to invest $270 million in the first phase of the Kemet Data Center project in the Suez Canal Economic Zone. The facility will span 80,000 square meters (860,000 square feet) with a capacity of 80MW and will be developed in two phases, with partial solar power generation.

Last week, Minister of Communications and Information Technology Raafat Hendy met with Intro Group board member Sherif Mohamed Abdel Fattah to discuss progress on the project. The two reviewed completed designs and the equipment and systems contracts Intro Group has already signed with suppliers, along with the implementation timeline and planned service launch.

The partnership builds on a 2024 Memorandum of Understanding between Intro Technology and data center provider Oman Data Park to develop the Kemet Data Center, which was valued at $450 million at the time of signing.

During the meeting, Hendy stressed his ministry's commitment to creating an "investment-friendly environment" to encourage private-sector data center development. He highlighted the Ministry of Communications and Information Technology's ongoing efforts to attract investment in Egyptian data center infrastructure and position the country as a regional hub.

This initiative reflects a broader government push. Last month, Hendy met with a delegation of US data center developers and the newly launched firm Heca Data to discuss plans for an integrated zone for hyperscale facilities and AI infrastructure. Separately, the government approved a $400 million data center license to Hassan Allam's digital arm to operate data centers and provide cloud computing services.

Egypt's national strategy aims to establish the country as a primary digital and subsea cable hub bridging Africa, the Middle East, and Europe. The effort is aligned with Egypt's Digital Vision plan, which seeks to modernize the country through digital transformation and skills development.
