Record low levels of the Danube River have forced the shutdown of Paks Nuclear Power Plant, which supplies nearly half of Hungary's electricity. Hungarians are bracing for potential blackouts as the plant halts generating power due to unprecedented water levels in the river—essential for cooling the facility.

Prime Minister Peter Magyar announced the escalating crisis on social media: "Due to the further drop in the Danube's water level, one of the last two generating units at the Paks Nuclear Power Plant will be shut down at 1:30 a.m. As a result, the plant's output will fall to just 240 megawatts, and tomorrow it will be completely shut down for the first time in 44 years."

The Danube River flows through and benefits 10 countries. It has receded to historic lows as Europe continues to grapple with an intense, prolonged heat dome. Some sections have exposed the riverbed entirely, while others have revealed old shipwrecks, artifacts, and fossils long submerged.

The plant siphons water directly from the river to cool its reactors. But the European heatwave dropped water levels to unprecedented lows that the plant's suction equipment could no longer reach. Last week, Budapest energy officials recorded water levels at 23 centimeters (9 inches)—far below the previous lowest-level record of 33 centimeters (13 inches) set in 2018. Magyar indicated the next five days would be critical for Hungary's energy situation.

The government evaluated expected consumption data, available domestic power plant capacities, and expected import and trading opportunities. "Mandatory restrictions on household consumption will not be necessary," Magyar announced. However, government officials asked major consumer companies to voluntarily reduce power consumption. Hungarian citizens were also urged to use energy moderately, especially during the "critical period" between 5 p.m. and 10 p.m.

The European Commission considered convening the Electricity Coordination Group. "Although the operator has emergency measures in place to guarantee nuclear safety, an event of this kind could further strain the regional electricity balance," said European Commission spokesperson Anna-Kaisa Itkonen. "The Commission stands ready to convene an ad hoc meeting of the Electricity Coordination Group."

Environmentalists view this as a signal for Hungary to pursue more resilient energy distribution. "Hungary needs to speed up its transition into a more resilient, decentralised energy system that relies less on climate-vulnerable infrastructure and more on energy savings, flexibility and renewable energy," said Akos Eger, executive president of Friends of the Earth Hungary.

Climate organization Energiaklub characterized the situation as a serious test of Hungary's regional power supply. "From Monday, when consumption is expected to rise and the Paks plant remains offline, a more serious situation will begin," said András Perger. He projected Hungary would lose 25 to 30 percent of its energy output due to the shutdown.
