India's rapid expansion of data centers and artificial intelligence facilities, backed by over $250 billion in investment commitments, faces a critical constraint: the national power grid is ill-equipped to handle the surging demand. While the country plans to scale operational capacity from 1.12 GW as of June 2025 to 26.3 GW by 2032, the physical infrastructure required to deliver this electricity is failing to keep pace.

The challenge lies in sheer power intensity. Unlike traditional data centers requiring 8–12 kW per rack, modern AI-focused facilities demand 50–60 kW per rack. This leap means existing transmission lines and substations are insufficient. Building the necessary 400 kV and 765 kV substations involves complex, time-consuming processes—land acquisition, right-of-way clearances—that routinely result in multi-year delays.

A standoff has emerged between data center operators and state-run distribution companies over funding responsibility. State utilities typically fund substations, while developers cover internal cabling and dedicated transmission lines. Yet the total cost for grid upgrades nationwide is estimated to span several lakh crore rupees. Officials in states like Odisha and Maharashtra have acknowledged that current grids cannot support the power demands of new hyperscale AI projects without building entirely new transmission networks.

Maharashtra, India's largest data center hub, is particularly strained. The state government has signed memorandums of understanding for investments worth ₹5 trillion, placing immense pressure on the Maharashtra State Electricity Transmission Company Limited (MSETCL). Recently, MSETCL awarded Bajel Projects Limited contracts worth over ₹700 crore to construct a 400 kV substation and associated lines, with a two-year completion target. Such projects underscore that critical power infrastructure lead times range from 14 months to five years.

Grid commissioning speed will act as the primary gatekeeper for data center growth over the coming years. The key monitorable ahead is whether state governments and private operators can reach consistent funding agreements to prevent execution delays for the massive capacity planned by 2032.
