India's massive push for data centers and AI infrastructure, backed by over $250 billion in investment, is colliding with serious power grid constraints.

The Ministry of Power estimates these facilities will require 26.3 gigawatts of electricity by fiscal year 2032, a dramatic jump from the current 1.12 gigawatts available in mid-2025. The existing infrastructure cannot accommodate this surge, creating a critical bottleneck for the country's digital ambitions.

Some states are taking action to address the gap. Odisha is constructing new substations to boost capacity, while Maharashtra has set a target to add 5 gigawatts by 2030. Public and private firms have already invested ₹1,500 crore into Maharashtra's power infrastructure upgrades. However, progress is hampered by delays in land acquisition, right-of-way clearances, and regulatory approvals.

Experts caution that without optimized power grids capable of meeting demand, India's data center sector could stall. AI facilities consume significantly more energy than traditional data centers, placing extraordinary pressure on power systems that are already struggling to keep pace. AI demand remains higher and more constant than any load the grid has previously encountered.
