Chinese memory manufacturers ChangXin Memory Technologies (CXMT) and Yangtze Memory Technologies Corp. (YMTC) are positioning themselves to compete directly in each other's core markets, according to a DigiTimes report. Historically, CXMT has focused on DRAM production while YMTC has specialized in NAND, but rising memory chip prices and surging AI-driven demand are incentivizing both companies to diversify.

YMTC is preparing to enter the DRAM market, with plans to begin trial production at its Phase 3 facility by the end of 2026. The trial run—designed to fine-tune production equipment before mass manufacturing—is expected to focus on LPDDR5 memory chips, targeting approximately 25,000 wafers per month of initial production capacity. This move capitalizes on the sector's elevated pricing, which has made DRAM production increasingly attractive.

CXMT, meanwhile, is pursuing NAND storage chip production despite having built its reputation in DRAM. The company is reportedly recruiting former YMTC workers to support its NAND development efforts and is exploring plans to build NAND research and production facilities in Beijing. However, CXMT's timeline for NAND production remains uncertain, with first production lines potentially coming online in 2028 or 2029. US sanctions present a significant obstacle, requiring CXMT to develop workarounds for 3D NAND stacking technology.

Patents are expected to emerge as a key competitive friction point between the two firms, potentially placing CXMT at a disadvantage as YMTC accelerates its memory chip production capabilities. The memory chip market's volatility—driven by red-hot AI demand that has reshaped traditional demand forecasting models—continues to reshape the competitive landscape across both DRAM and NAND segments.
