Nebius Group N.V. (NASDAQ: NBIS) surged more than 18% on July 21 after NVIDIA Corporation (NASDAQ: NVDA) disclosed a 9.3% beneficial ownership stake in the AI cloud infrastructure company. The disclosure stems from Nvidia's previously announced $2 billion strategic investment, reinforcing investor confidence that Nebius is emerging as one of Nvidia's most critical infrastructure partners.

Nvidia's substantial stake signals that the GPU giant views Nebius as strategically vital rather than simply another cloud customer. The two companies have agreed to collaborate on building next-generation AI cloud infrastructure, with Nebius set to deploy more than 5 gigawatts of Nvidia-powered AI systems by 2030—a target that would position Nebius as one of the world's largest dedicated AI cloud providers.

As a designated Nvidia strategic partner, Nebius gains access to next-generation GPU technology, including Rubin hardware, Vera CPUs, and Bluefield networking solutions, enabling accelerated capacity rollout.

Nebius has already demonstrated substantial commercial traction. The company secured a $17 billion infrastructure supply deal with Microsoft and an expanded agreement worth up to $27 billion with Meta Platforms. To fund its expansion, Nebius entered into a senior secured debt facility of approximately $775 million.

Analyst sentiment has turned decisively positive. Northland maintained an Outperform rating while raising its price target to $410 from $248, reflecting growing institutional confidence. Hedge fund interest has also expanded, with 60 hedge funds holding Nebius shares at the end of the first quarter of 2026, compared to 54 funds in the fourth quarter of 2025. Notable institutional moves included Orbis Investment Management increasing its position by 150%, Value Aligned Research Advisors raising its stake by 76%, and Two Sigma Advisors opening a new position.

However, significant headwinds persist. Nebius remains one of the most heavily shorted large-cap AI infrastructure stocks, with 61 million shares sold short and short interest at approximately 24%, suggesting market skepticism about the company's valuation and execution on capital-intensive growth plans. Building AI infrastructure at this scale demands continuous multi-billion dollar investments in GPUs, data centers, networking, and power, which could delay profitability and necessitate future capital raises. Nebius also faces formidable competition from Amazon AWS, Microsoft Azure, and Google Cloud, all possessing substantially greater resources and established enterprise customer bases.

Investors are currently pricing in years of rapid revenue expansion, making NBIS shares particularly sensitive to any slowdown in AI spending trends or infrastructure demand. With nearly 10% ownership, Nvidia has positioned Nebius as one of its largest strategic infrastructure investments, materially altering how the market should assess the company's competitive positioning. The combination of Nvidia's endorsement, major customer contracts, and growing hedge fund interest creates a strategically compelling but speculative growth opportunity, one likely to experience sharp volatility driven by elevated short interest.
