Alphabet backs 2.4 gigawatts of GPU/HPC capacity leases across 10 projects involving crypto miners pivoting to AI infrastructure.
Alphabet has locked down leases covering roughly 2.4 gigawatts of capacity spread across ten projects, signaling serious commitment to securing power for AI data centers. The company is pursuing this goal by partnering with operators that previously mined Bitcoin.
A key partnership illustrates the strategy. In September 2025, Google agreed to backstop $1.4 billion of a $3 billion, 10-year AI hosting lease between Fluidstack and Cipher Mining. The initial arrangement covers 168 megawatts of capacity at a Texas facility, with room to scale to 244 megawatts. In exchange for the guarantee, Alphabet received warrants granting it an approximately 5.4% equity stake in Cipher Mining. Cipher itself has built out a roughly 2.4 gigawatt development pipeline focused on high-performance computing and AI applications—a stark pivot from its origins as a Bitcoin mining operation.
Alphabet also backed a previous $1.8 billion guarantee in a separate deal between Fluidstack and TeraWulf covering 200 megawatts of capacity.
Bitcoin miners spent the last decade securing cheap power in remote locations and building electrical infrastructure to consume enormous amounts of it. The shift from mining Bitcoin to hosting AI workloads is less a strategic reinvention than a tenant swap: the buildings and power contracts remain the same. GPUs replacing ASICs require the same essential commodity—reliable, cheap electricity delivered at scale.
Rather than acquiring these companies outright, Google is using lease guarantees and warrant positions to maintain flexibility, gaining access to needed power and space without taking on operational complexity.
In December 2025, Alphabet announced plans to acquire clean energy developer Intersect Power for $4.75 billion plus debt. Intersect's portfolio targets 10.8 gigawatts of total capacity by 2028. This deal gives Google control over greenfield renewable energy and data center projects. Combined with its crypto miner partnerships, Alphabet is executing a two-pronged strategy: deploying existing miner infrastructure for near-term capacity while developing new clean energy projects for long-term scalability.
For publicly traded crypto miners pursuing HPC pivot strategies, Google's willingness to backstop multi-billion-dollar leases provides crucial credibility. Having Alphabet as a financial guarantor—and in Cipher's case as a roughly 5.4% equity holder—materially changes the risk profile.
However, these commitments carry duration risk. The Cipher-Fluidstack lease spans ten years. Should AI demand growth slow or technological shifts reduce compute requirements, the underlying economics could deteriorate. Google's guarantee protects lease payments but does not insulate the business model itself from potential obsolescence.
