NVIDIA-backed Lambda Labs seeks a $4 billion funding round at a soaring valuation, targeting a 2027 IPO to compete with CoreWeave, IREN, and Nebius in the GPU cloud market.

A tier-one GPU cloud provider raising $4B signals sustained demand for dedicated AI compute capacity and validates the neocloud sector's capital intensity and durability.

Lambda, the Nvidia-backed AI cloud computing startup, is preparing to raise up to $4 billion in financing at a pre-money valuation of $14.5 billion, potentially marking its final private funding round before a planned 2027 initial public offering. Blackstone and Coatue Management are leading the round; both have invested aggressively in AI and data center sectors in recent years. The company's valuation has more than doubled since November 2025, when it closed a $1.5 billion round led by TWG Capital at a post-money valuation of $5.9 billion.

Lambda's rapid valuation climb is anchored by explosive growth in its backlog of contracted orders. The backlog surged from $15 billion in June to $50 billion in September—a tripling in three months. However, this growth is heavily concentrated: Anthropic, the developer of Claude, signed a $35 billion commitment with Lambda in late August to lease Nvidia hardware deployed at facilities operated by Hut8 in Texas. Anthropic's commitment represents approximately 70 percent of Lambda's current backlog, making customer concentration and contract-to-revenue conversion critical focal points for investor scrutiny.

The real challenge Lambda faces is not demand but capital. Fulfilling a $50 billion backlog requires massive expenditures on data centers and GPU servers. The company has been actively tapping debt markets throughout the year, securing a $1 billion credit facility, a $926 million term loan, and an additional $1 billion in recent financing. This dual-track capital strategy—raising equity and debt simultaneously—reflects the reality that AI computing providers must deploy enormous capital to build capacity before converting orders into revenue. Lambda's fundraising aligns with a broader industry trend: competing neocloud providers, including Nvidia-backed CoreWeave and Nebius, are similarly tapping capital markets, and UK-based Nscale filed for an IPO in September.

Lambda has restructured its management team to prepare for public markets. In May, co-founder Stephen Balaban transitioned to Chief Technology Officer, with Michel Combes taking over as CEO; co-founder Michael Balaban moved to Chief Product Officer. Combes previously served as CEO of SoftBank International, Sprint, and Alcatel-Lucent, bringing extensive large-enterprise management experience. The company also hired former Charter Communications executive Charles Fisher as CFO and appointed former AT&T Communications CEO John Donovan as board chairman, establishing a governance structure aligned with public-company expectations.

Lambda was founded in 2012 by brothers Stephen and Michael Balaban, both University of Michigan computer science graduates. Nvidia participated in the company's $480 million Series D round in February 2025. Stephen Balaban has stated that Lambda remains firmly committed to Nvidia's technology, with all chips and server racks sourced from Nvidia.

The company's IPO timeline has shifted from an earlier 2026 target to 2027, reflecting broader market uncertainty. If the $4 billion fundraising closes successfully, the capital would bolster the company's position ahead of public markets, with proceeds primarily allocated toward data center expansion, GPU capacity increases, and infrastructure to support growing AI customer demand. The $50 billion backlog strengthens the IPO narrative, yet Anthropic's outsized 70 percent share of that backlog raises questions about revenue conversion, GPU supply availability, and cost management—factors that will shape how public markets value the company at listing.
