NVIDIA faces a ceramic capacitor supply squeeze impacting Rubin roadmap; Kyber interconnect delays compound.

Nvidia's dominance in artificial-intelligence chips has rested on a simple but powerful formula: unrivaled performance, commanding prices, and a captive customer base. As the company prepares to roll out its next-generation Rubin platform, that formula faces its most significant stress test yet—not from rival chipmakers, but from ceramic capacitors and an uncertain timeline for its most powerful rack system.

The stock reflects these pressures. After reaching a record €202.50 earlier this year, shares have slipped to around €178, oscillating between €176.54 and €178.68. The forward price-to-earnings ratio has fallen to a historic low of 18, prompting some analysts to argue the stock is deeply undervalued despite mounting supply-chain concerns.

Rubin is scheduled to launch in the second half of 2027, with initial systems destined for eight major cloud partners. But the platform's hardware complexity is creating an unexpected bottleneck: each Rubin rack requires nearly 600,000 multilayer ceramic capacitors—a staggering volume compared with standard servers. Spot prices for these components have surged up to 60% since winter, with availability remaining tight.

The cost impact appears manageable in absolute terms. High-bandwidth memory adds only €200,000–€300,000 per rack, and Nvidia's pricing power remains formidable. A Rubin rack is expected to command €6–€7 million, up from a few million for the preceding Blackwell generation. This pricing leverage should allow Nvidia to maintain gross margins near 70%. The real risk lies in logistics: if capacitor shortages force production delays or reduce volumes, the revenue consequences could be severe.

Compounding this uncertainty is a reported delay affecting Kyber NVL144—the highest-performance variant in the Rubin Ultra line. According to industry sources, Kyber may not ship until 2028, representing a delay of more than 12 months. While Nvidia's management has denied that the standard Rubin platform is behind schedule and emphasized that the overall AI roadmap remains on track, the absence of a high-end option creates an opening for competitors.

AMD's MI500X, Google's TPUv8i, and Huawei's Atlas 350 are all targeting the inference market, where Nvidia currently controls 80% of the market. Should cloud giants be unable to access Kyber racks, they may accelerate qualification of these alternatives.

Nvidia's financial position remains extraordinarily strong. Operating cash flow exceeded $50 billion in the fiscal first quarter, and the company maintains a three-digit-billion-dollar share buyback authorization. Current-quarter revenue is expected to nearly double year-over-year. Yet the company's supply-chain commitments—$119 billion in outstanding obligations—underscore the risk that hardware built for promised orders could sit idle if data-center construction slows.

Power availability presents an additional wildcard. In the first quarter of 2026, regulators and grid operators blocked AI projects worth over $130 billion globally. If cloud providers cannot deploy hardware quickly enough, Nvidia could face a significant inventory build-up.

The bull case rests on the historic P/E trough and the accelerating performance of each new generation. The Rubin GPU packs 336 billion transistors, up from 208 billion in Blackwell, promising substantially lower inference costs and faster training with fewer compute cores. Bank of America analysts emphasize Nvidia's unmatched pricing power, and the consensus analyst target of €263.69 implies nearly 50% upside from current levels. A potential loosening of export restrictions on the H200 chip for China could provide an additional revenue boost, though this remains speculative.

Bears see a different scenario. Beyond the ceramic capacitor squeeze, the Kyber delay affords rivals a rare multiyear window. AMD, Google, and even Huawei are advancing specialized chips for inference, where Nvidia's absolute performance advantage is less decisive. Rising component costs could simultaneously erode margins, even with pricing power in place.

Technically, the stock has slipped below its 50-day moving average of roughly €181 and is testing support near the 200-day line at €164.65. A smooth Rubin rollout could drive the stock back toward the 50-day average, but any indication of shipment delays could trigger a retest of the 52-week low of €138.98.

All attention turns to Nvidia's fiscal second-quarter earnings report, scheduled for August 26, with the market expecting revenue of nearly $92 billion. That report will provide critical data on whether supply constraints are slowing the growth trajectory. For now, Nvidia's pricing power remains its strongest asset—but the physical and logistical hurdles surrounding Rubin demonstrate that even the most dominant chipmaker cannot simply bypass a shortage of ceramic capacitors.
