OpenAI raises new funding round at $1.4 trillion valuation

Microsoft-backed OpenAI is in discussions for a new funding round of at least $30 billion at roughly a $1.4 trillion valuation, according to Bloomberg. The proposed raise would provide the ChatGPT maker with substantial capital reserves while the company delays its public offering and accelerates spending on computing infrastructure. The valuation reflects continued aggressive pricing of leading AI companies despite persistent questions about cash burn, infrastructure costs, and the path to profitability for frontier models.

OpenAI develops ChatGPT, Codex, and a growing portfolio of AI models alongside enterprise tools. The company generates revenue through consumer subscriptions, business products, and API access while investing heavily in the computing capacity required to train and operate increasingly sophisticated models. The talks remain preliminary and terms may shift.

A $1.4 trillion valuation would mark another substantial jump from OpenAI's $852 billion post-money valuation in March, when the company announced $122 billion in committed capital. It would also surpass earlier reports of financing discussions around a $1.2 trillion valuation.

The timing is significant because CEO Sam Altman announced earlier this month that OpenAI would not pursue an IPO in 2026, pushing any public listing to at least 2027 as the company prioritizes AI safety concerns. The funding discussions coincide with OpenAI's expansion beyond chatbots. At its DevDay conference Tuesday, the company unveiled new agentic and developer products designed to deepen integration of its technology into consumer and enterprise workflows.

For investors, the central question remains whether OpenAI can transform its extraordinary capital requirements into proportional revenue growth. Key metrics to monitor include the final round size and valuation, OpenAI's revenue trajectory, compute spending patterns, and progress toward a 2027 IPO.
