Digital Realty is developing a cable landing station (CLS) at its LAX12 facility in Los Angeles, expanding undersea interconnect capacity.
Digital Realty announced plans to construct a new cable landing station (CLS) at its LAX12 data center in Los Angeles. The project is expected to begin supporting cables in 2028; the company has not disclosed how many cables the CLS will be able to host.
LAX12 is located at 2260 East El Segundo Boulevard in El Segundo and was launched in 2005. The two-story facility encompasses 129,000 square feet (12,000 square meters) and offers around 7 megawatts of capacity. The site was originally developed by 365 Main and acquired by Digital Realty in 2010. Digital's LAX11 facility is located nearby.
"This development reflects our continued focus on expanding Digital Realty's role in supporting global connectivity," said Andy Power, president and CEO of Digital Realty. "By bringing together subsea landing infrastructure with our existing interconnection and data center platform, we are strengthening the intercontinental connectivity available across our Los Angeles campus and providing our customers with a more seamless and scalable environment for connecting across regions."
The project will be undertaken in partnership with Assured Communications, a specialist in subsea infrastructure design and delivery. "Assured Communications is supporting the design, engineering and construction of the project, drawing on its experience in subsea cable systems and landing infrastructure development," said Joel Ogren, founder and CEO of Assured Communications. "Projects like this are reshaping how global infrastructure is deployed and connected. We're excited to help bring a new subsea cable landing station to Los Angeles to further strengthen connectivity between Asia Pacific and North America."
Los Angeles is a landing point for multiple current and planned subsea cables connecting the United States to Asia, Australia, and South America. Digital Realty operates four facilities across the Los Angeles area, and last year acquired a 5.4-acre site at 4400 Pacific Boulevard in Vernon for future development.
