Wait, I must avoid Han characters. Corrected: 칩 출하량의 급증은 글로벌 AI 하드웨어 구축에서 한국산 메모리 및 반도체 공급이 얼마나 핵심적인 위치를 차지하게 되었는지를 잘 보여준다.

**South Korea's Chip Exports Rise 259% to $56.4 Billion, Nearly Half of All Exports**

South Korea exported $56.44 billion of semiconductors in October 2026, up 259.4% from a year earlier, according to the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy. By our arithmetic, chips were 49.0% of the country's $115.28 billion in exports, up from about 26.4% in October 2025.

Total exports rose 93.7%, the ministry said, making October the second-highest month on record after September's $121.1 billion. Semiconductors supplied about 73% of the $55.8 billion increase in exports, by our arithmetic.

**What the Ministry Reported**

Imports rose 36.0% to $72.78 billion, leaving a trade surplus of $42.50 billion. Exports have now topped $110 billion for two straight months.

Chip exports stayed above $50 billion for a second month as global big tech companies continued spending to secure leadership in AI, keeping prices and volumes high, the ministry said. September's $60.3 billion remains the monthly record.

Exports of everything other than chips rose 34%. Computer exports, which the ministry ties to AI server investment and demand for server SSDs, rose 496.6% to $5.85 billion. Together with chips, those two categories made up 54.0% of October exports, by our arithmetic.

**Memory Prices and Data-Centre Equipment**

The release lists the fixed price of a DDR5 16Gb chip at $40.0 in June, $45.0 in July, $46.5 in August, $48.0 in September and $50.0 in October, a 25% rise by our arithmetic. The NAND 128Gb price moved from $28.8 to $30.6 over the same months.

Electrical equipment exports rose 74.0% to $1.99 billion, the highest monthly figure on record, driven by demand for transformers, wires and cables for AI data centres, the ministry said. Imports of semiconductor equipment rose 49.2% to $2.52 billion.

**Where the Chips Went**

Exports to China rose 133.6% to $26.98 billion, and exports to the United States rose 185.8% to $24.90 billion. Exports to ASEAN rose 128.0% to a record $21.33 billion.

For 1 to 25 October, the ministry put semiconductor exports to China at $14.8 billion, up 331%, and to the United States at $5.8 billion, up 497%. Computer exports over the same period reached $2.2 billion, up 816%.

**A Holiday Effect**

Part of the jump reflects the calendar. The ministry says the Chuseok holiday moved from October 2025 to September 2026, adding working days this October. Adjusted for working days, average daily exports rose 76% to $5.24 billion, well below the 93.7% headline figure.

**One Product Line Carries the Export Base**

As we read the release, South Korea's export base has narrowed toward the AI build-out. By our arithmetic, one product category went from about a quarter of the country's exports to about half in twelve months. Taiwan showed a similar pattern in September.

Exports for January to October reached $930.0 billion, up 60.6%, the ministry said, leaving $70 billion to reach the $1 trillion mark.

**The Structural Read**

Chips rose 259% while everything else rose 34%. By our arithmetic, that means semiconductors supplied about 73% of the $55.8 billion increase in exports.

The ministry links the chip surge to high prices as well as higher volumes. The DDR5 16Gb fixed price it lists rose 25% from June to October, by our arithmetic.

Some of the 93.7% headline reflects the Chuseok holiday moving into September. The ministry's working-day-adjusted daily average rose 76%.

Kim Jung-kwan, Minister of Trade, Industry and Energy (our translation), said on 1 November 2026: "With our exports continuing solid growth of more than $110 billion in October, achieving $1 trillion of annual exports in November is certain."

**Three Implications**

*For memory buyers:* The ministry lists the DDR5 16Gb fixed price at $50.0 in October, up from $40.0 in June.

*For data-centre suppliers:* The ministry says electrical equipment exports hit a monthly record of $1.99 billion on AI data-centre demand for transformers, wires and cables.

*For South Korea's economy:* The ministry says January to October exports reached $930.0 billion, $70 billion short of $1 trillion.

**Connecting to the Memory Bottleneck**

This story fits the broader argument in Business Engineer's analysis, "The AI Memory Chokepoint," which states: "Memory is becoming the new compute." Korea's October trade data reflects that constraint as a price and volume signal at the national level. The framework is the publication's own argument and does not address Korea's trade figures.

**What Is Not Established**

The release does not break down chip exports by company or by product type, such as HBM. Its country-level chip figures cover only 1 to 25 October. The October 2025 values, the shares and the 73% figure are our arithmetic based on the ministry's growth rates.

**The Bottom Line**

South Korea's semiconductor exports rose 259.4% to $56.44 billion in October, according to the trade ministry. By our arithmetic, chips made up 49.0% of the country's exports, up from about 26.4% a year earlier.

*Sourcing note:* All trade figures come from the Korea Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy release of 1 November 2026, read in Korean and translated by us. The October 2025 values and the 49.0%, 26.4%, 54.0%, 73% and 25% figures are our arithmetic. We did not contact the ministry.
