Anthropic has secured compute contracts valued at up to $517 billion over an eleven-month period, according to The Information. Since October 2025, the company has committed to at least 14.8 gigawatts of additional computing power, building on the one to two gigawatts it already operates while planning its own data centers. Total planned capacity may still fall short of OpenAI’s 30-gigawatt target for 2030, though many of Anthropic’s agreements extend well beyond that horizon, complicating direct comparisons, The Information notes. Neither firm can currently fund these commitments through revenue alone. According to Bloomberg, Anthropic’s annualized revenue has surpassed $65 billion, while OpenAI exceeded $40 billion as of July.

In early 2026, Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei cautioned against rapid investment, stating that competitors “don’t really understand the risks they’re taking.” Today, however, Anthropic finds itself racing to close the gap. Meanwhile, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman is advocating for restraint, warning of “unsustainable silliness” among neo-cloud providers. Technical progress, he argues, could turn today’s expensive projects into bad bets.
