Despite perceptions of obsolescence, magnetic tape remains difficult to surpass for low-cost, power-efficient, and cyber-resilient long-term storage. In Q1 2026, the Linear Tape-Open (LTO) Program Technology Provider Companies (TPCs)—HPE, IBM, and Quantum Corp.—reported a 57% year-over-year increase in capacity shipments. This surge is driven by escalating AI data center demands, alongside sustained requirements for traditional archive workloads and cyber-resilient backup solutions.

The medium’s continued relevance stands in contrast to previous industry skepticism, including Elon Musk’s DOGE crusade to phase out tape technology as outdated. Nevertheless, the format achieved record-breaking volumes recently. In 2024, 176.5 exabytes of compressed LTO tape capacity were shipped, marking a 15.4% year-over-year increase. While 2025 saw a modest 9% decline to 160.3 exabytes—a dip the TPCs characterized on social media as the result of bad weather—shipped capacity remained historically high. As an LTO program representative noted in correspondence with Tom’s Hardware, “shipped capacity was higher than any other year in history save 2024 itself.”

Market dynamics continue to favor tape adoption amid shifting infrastructure priorities. “We are seeing unprecedented data growth combined with increasing cost, energy, and cyber resilience pressures across the industry,” said Hugues Meyrath, CEO of Quantum. “As organizations adapt to this new reality, tape is increasingly viewed as a strategic component of modern data infrastructure, delivering predictable economics and resilient long-term data retention at scale.”

Growth is further accelerated by widespread market readiness for newer generations. LTO-9 continues to gain traction as a worthwhile upgrade path for legacy sticker-based systems, offering up to 18TB of uncompressed or 45TB of compressed storage per cartridge. Meanwhile, early ramp-up of LTO-10 is contributing to 2026 shipment figures, with next-generation cartridges supporting up to 40TB natively or 100TB when compressed. Looking ahead, TPCs have outlined a roadmap extending through LTO-14, which promises up to 576TB of native capacity and 1,440TB of compressed storage per cartridge.

These tape advancements arrive alongside rapid developments elsewhere in the storage landscape. Seagate plans to begin qualifying record-setting 50TB hard disk drives in 2027, while enterprise solid-state drives currently cost 18.6 times more than HDDs, with 30TB models reaching $22,600. Concurrently, Nvidia has unveiled high-speed AI data center storage servers featuring 2.9 petabytes of capacity and extreme PCIe 6.0 performance. Within this competitive environment, tape’s economic and operational advantages remain distinctly compelling.

The strong start to 2026 underscores tape’s enduring value proposition. The TPCs emphasize that tape belongs “in every storage mix as an anchor against disruption,” citing its status as the storage medium with “the lowest cost per terabyte, provides excellent cyber-resilience, and is highly power-efficient.” As AI workloads and archival needs expand, magnetic tape continues to secure its role as a foundational element of scalable, future-proof data infrastructure.
