Hanwha Ocean will unveil the first physical model of its 60MW floating data center (FDC) at Gastech 2026 in Bangkok, Thailand, opening September 14th. The showcase represents the South Korean shipbuilder's full-scale entry into offshore infrastructure—an emerging solution to the power, land, and cooling constraints that plague conventional land-based data centers.

Gastech 2026, the world's largest gas exhibition, will draw more than 1,000 companies and an estimated 50,000 visitors from September 14–17. This marks the first time an FDC has been presented in physical model form to the global market.

## Offshore Solutions to Land-Based Challenges

Explosive AI demand has driven data center proliferation, yet land-based facilities face mounting obstacles: massive power consumption, land acquisition bottlenecks, declining cooling efficiency, and local opposition to industrial expansion. Hanwha Ocean's FDC installs data centers on offshore floating structures designed to generate their own power at sea and leverage cold seawater for direct cooling, maximizing energy efficiency. A modular design enables flexible configuration of power generation methods, server types, and capacity to match site conditions or customer specifications.

The company recently secured Approval in Principle (AiP) from the American Bureau of Shipping (ABS) for the 60MW-class FDC's conceptual design. Son Young-chang, Executive Vice President and head of Product Strategy & Technology, stated: "We will lead the global FDC market by combining our accumulated shipbuilding and offshore engineering expertise with Hanwha Group's energy and data capabilities."

Hanwha Ocean emphasizes that integrating Hanwha Group affiliates' capabilities—spanning shipbuilding, offshore technology, data center operations, power generation and energy, operations and maintenance, and security—provides a consolidated competitive advantage. The exhibition will also feature a model of a zero-carbon LNG carrier: a 174,000-cubic-meter vessel powered by ammonia gas turbines for zero-carbon electric propulsion, eliminating pilot oil usage during startup.

## Intensifying Rivalry in Future Maritime Markets

HD Hyundai will also showcase eco-friendly and digital transformation technologies at Gastech through a joint booth operated by five affiliates: HD Korea Shipbuilding & Offshore Engineering, HD Hyundai Heavy Industries, HD Hyundai Samho, HD Hyundai Marine Solution, and HD Hyundai Electric. Group Chairman Chung Ki-sun and executives including HD Korea Shipbuilding & Offshore Engineering CEO Kim Hyung-kwan will oversee 30 scheduled engagements. The company will complete a Lloyd's Register assessment of a future LNG carrier featuring wind-assisted propulsion and forward accommodation, secure AiP for a liquefied CO2 carrier with hybrid electric propulsion, and present a technical seminar on the world's first three-tank LNG carrier developed with France's GTT.

With both Hanwha Ocean and HD Hyundai showcasing next-generation maritime technologies at the world's largest gas exhibition, competition for global orders in eco-friendly vessels and offshore infrastructure is expected to accelerate.
