Google has formally announced its first data center in Wyoming.
The search giant revealed plans for the facility in Cheyenne, Laramie County, as part of a $17 billion commitment in the Cowboy State. The company did not disclose the data center's capacity, although earlier reports suggest it could total up to 2.7GW.
As part of the investment, Google has partnered with Tallgrass Energy, Black Hills Energy, American Electric Power (AEP), and Related Digital to develop the facility.
The data center will be powered by a 702MW fuel cell project with carbon capture and storage (CCS), under a Power Purchase Agreement signed with AEP last month. The fuel cells will run on natural gas, and the CCS technology will seek to capture the associated CO2, which will be sequestered and stored at Tallgrass's nearby Eastern Wyoming Sequestration Hub. Bloom Energy will supply the solid oxide fuel cells, which will be owned and operated by AEP.
The data center will also offtake power from gas generators operated by Tallgrass Energy and Black Hills Energy. Google said it is currently conducting a technical front-end engineering and design (FEED) study to evaluate fitting Tallgrass's combined cycle turbines with CCS technology. The company has committed to paying for 100 percent of the power it uses at the data center.
"Together, these efforts represent a novel approach to powering data centers efficiently, accelerating the commercialization of CCS, and creating pathways to reduce the carbon emissions associated with natural gas generation," said Steve Walter, VP, Global Infrastructure and Energy.
The data center is expected to use an air-cooled system to "minimize strain on local water resources," Walter added.
Google was revealed to be the company behind the planned campus in July. The campus will be developed on a 716-acre parcel eight miles south of Cheyenne in the Switchgrass Industrial Park. The application suggests that four data halls will be built, along with an office hub, logistics, and network buildings. Construction is slated for completion by 2031.
The project was previously being developed by Crusoe under the name Project Jade. At the time, it was described as a 1.8GW campus that could scale to 10GW, but in June, Crusoe said it had paused work on the site "at the request of our customer." According to local reports at the time, the campus is now being developed by Google's subsidiary Jupiter Star Holdings, LLC, replacing Crusoe.
Google said the development will provide significant benefits to the local community and recently hosted a community meeting in downtown Cheyenne. The company expects the project to generate hundreds of millions of dollars in local property taxes for Laramie County and School District 1.
Cheyenne, the capital city of Wyoming, is home to several large projects. Microsoft broke ground on a campus in Cheyenne in August 2025 and is seeking to purchase a further 3,200 acres of land. Meta also operates a large-scale data center campus in the area. In October 2025, Related Digital broke ground on a $1.2bn data center project for CoreWeave.
