Tencent has signed a five-year, $7 billion lease with Oracle for 100,000 advanced AI chips deployed across Oracle data centres in Southeast Asia. According to Financial Times reporting, the agreement includes an upfront payment of approximately 30 per cent. Oracle and Tencent declined to comment on the deal. The arrangement underscores both the surging computational demands of Tencent's AI expansion and the strategic sourcing pressures created by US export restrictions, which have made advanced chips difficult to obtain directly in China.

The scale of the commitment—100,000 chips valued at $7 billion—reflects the intense competition among major technology firms for AI infrastructure and the significant capital required to develop and deploy large language models. Tencent is actively increasing investment in LLMs as part of its broader artificial intelligence strategy. The company has recently previewed a new AI image-generation model aimed at professional creators, offering text-to-image and image-to-image capabilities alongside other advanced features.

Southeast Asia has emerged as a critical regional hub for AI data centre capacity, offering companies a pathway to secure advanced compute infrastructure while navigating international trade restrictions. The region's growing digital economy and strategic location make it an attractive base for such investments. Meanwhile, Beijing is promoting the development of domestic alternatives to US technology providers, pursuing a dual strategy to bolster self-sufficiency while reducing reliance on foreign hardware.

The transaction illustrates how major technology players are adapting their sourcing strategies in response to both market demands and geopolitical constraints. Chinese firms are racing to secure advanced AI chips as US export curbs continue to tighten, and cross-border arrangements like Tencent's lease with Oracle are increasingly common as companies seek sustained access to cutting-edge capabilities.
