LG Uplus is partnering with GS Engineering & Construction, Xi C&A, and other industry leaders to develop a standardized model for prefabricated modular data centers (PMDCs). As artificial intelligence drives surging demand for data infrastructure, the alliance aims to accelerate construction timelines while maintaining consistent design and build quality.

On September 6, LG Uplus announced that the parties signed a “business agreement to build a PMDC alliance” on September 4 at the Pyeongchon Mega Center in Anyang, Gyeonggi Province. The signing ceremony was attended by LG Uplus CEO Hong Bum-Shik; GS Engineering & Construction CEO Huh Yoon-hong; Xi C&A CEO Kim Uk-soo; Gansam Architects & Partners Managing Principal Park Moo-chan; and D&O CM CEO Lee Young-ho.

PMDC technology standardizes structural frameworks, power distribution, and cooling systems, which are then prefabricated in factories and assembled on-site. Compared to conventional data center construction, this approach significantly reduces build times and allows facilities to be scaled incrementally in response to fluctuating demand.

Since April, the consortium has jointly evaluated a standard framework for deploying PMDCs in real-world AI data center (AIDC) projects. The initiative focuses on two primary applications: a new-build model for a 100-megawatt hyperscale data center and a retrofit model designed to convert existing structures into data centers.

The agreement formally delineates each partner’s responsibilities. LG Uplus will establish operating standards and technical specifications based on its operational experience, while overseeing strategic direction and model validation. GS Engineering & Construction will apply its large-scale data center expertise to optimize constructability and construction processes for the new-build model. Xi C&A will lead development of the retrofit model, leveraging its mechanical, electrical, and plumbing (MEP) expertise in power and cooling systems. Gansam Architects & Partners will manage standard design, and D&O CM will handle project management and construction management (CM).

Moving forward, the participating companies intend to integrate their end-to-end capabilities—spanning design, construction, operations, and project management—to finalize the standard model and deploy it across upcoming infrastructure projects.

“In AI data centers, the ability to build the necessary infrastructure in a timely manner to match customer demand is becoming more important,” said LG Uplus CEO Hong Bum-Shik. “We will develop PMDC models with corporations in design, construction, and operations to strengthen competitiveness in building AIDCs.”
