Property investor GLP has commenced construction on a 200MW data center campus in Foshan, Guangdong Province, China. On 4 September, the company announced that work has begun on the initial 40MW of IT capacity. With a total investment of RMB 4 billion ($600 million), the facility is expected to become one of the largest data center projects in the Greater Bay Area.

The campus is being purpose-built for an unnamed internet and cloud services company, marking an expansion of its existing partnership with GLP. “We are delighted to expand our partnership with a leading hyperscale customer and deeply value the continued trust they have placed in GLP. AI is creating one of the most significant infrastructure opportunities of the next decade, and the scale of this new campus validates our strategy of building a differentiated digital infrastructure platform for the AI era,” said Gavin Shen, president of digital infrastructure at GLP China. “By combining infrastructure development, data center operations, energy integration, and capital management capabilities, we provide customers with end-to-end support that helps them deploy faster, scale more efficiently, and create lasting value in the digital economy.”

Designed to meet high-density computing demands, the data center will utilize hybrid liquid and air cooling systems capable of supporting liquid-cooled densities of up to 140kW per rack. GLP is employing modular construction techniques across the site, incorporating prefabricated components that the company states will enable project delivery in as little as four months.

Foshan, a prefecture-level city in central Guangdong, represents a secondary data center market in China, where primary hubs are concentrated around Shanghai, Beijing, and Langfang. GLP has operated in China’s data center sector since 2018 and currently manages a portfolio of 20 operational and under-development facilities totaling 1.4GW of IT capacity.

The Foshan project aligns with GLP’s broader strategic pivot toward the domestic market. In 2024, the company divested its international business unit, including its data center platform Ada Infrastructure, to Ares Management Corporation for $3.7 billion to concentrate exclusively on China. This focus follows recent domestic expansions, including a July 2026 strategic cooperation agreement with the Ulanqab government to develop multi-gigawatt hyperscale digital infrastructure in Inner Mongolia, and the April 2025 closure of its first digital infrastructure-focused fund in China, which is earmarked for acquiring data center assets.
