Google plans to invest $15 billion to expand its data center infrastructure in Malaysia during 2027 and 2028, according to Bloomberg. The funding will go toward building new computing hubs and investing in water and power infrastructure in the country.

Data center investment will focus on Google's existing campus in the Elmina Business Park, Selangor. The company will also develop new campuses in Selangor and Negeri Sembilan, with construction running through 2027 and 2028.

In May last year, Google bought 389 acres of land in Port Dickson, Negeri Sembilan, where it intends to build a data center. Port Dickson lies about 90 km (55.9 miles) south of Kuala Lumpur, on the banks of the Strait of Malacca. Reports indicate the facility will have a capacity of between 500 MW and 1 GW, with Gamuda Engineering responsible for the engineering and infrastructure works.

Google broke ground on its existing data center campus in October 2024. The first phase of that campus, expected to have a capacity of 100 MW, is slated for completion later this year.

Details of the data center projects themselves are limited, but they are expected to support more than 9,000 local jobs a year, including technicians, mechanical and electrical engineers, logistics staff, and security managers.

Ruth Porat, Alphabet's chief investment officer, said the investment "reflects our confidence in the strength of Malaysia's leadership, its skilled workforce, and enthusiasm for digital transformation."

Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim added: "Our nation possesses the stability, the talent, and the ambition to be a premier digital powerhouse in Southeast Asia."

As Google expands its data center capacity in the country, it will also add energy capacity and help advance Malaysia's clean energy transition. In total, Google plans to bring 1 GW of clean energy capacity to Malaysia's grid.

Earlier this week, Google committed $160 million to develop shared water infrastructure in Negeri Sembilan to support its planned data center in the region.

This latest investment pledge builds on Google's commitment to invest $2 billion in the country in 2024.
