The power arm of Indian conglomerate Tata has announced plans to build more than 2.8GW of power projects to meet the energy demands of India's data center boom.

According to the company, the agreement will cover renewable energy, transmission, and distribution projects. The pipeline comprises about 430MW of upcoming load on its distribution network, 1,236MW of transmission-linked opportunities, and 1,150MW of green energy capacity under active engagement. Tata Power currently has 29 active workstreams across 18 data center operators, which it did not disclose.

The company also said it offers powered land, transmission and grid connectivity, renewable energy, storage, cooling, and utility infrastructure to hyperscalers and data center developers.

In the Mumbai metropolitan region, the company said it will upgrade its 110kV and 220kV network by adding transformation and transmission capacity and building in redundancy. It is also developing new receiving stations and a 400kV transmission ring network. The work is part of its ₹15,000 crore ($1.6 billion) Mumbai Grid Upgradation and Expansion Plan.

Tata Power is one of the largest vertically integrated power companies in India. According to its latest figures, the company has an operational generation capacity of 16.7GW, of which 7.8GW is classified as clean energy capacity.

Current estimates by the Central Electricity Authority project that AI data centers could add approximately 26.3GW of electricity demand in India by 2031-32. Tata is a key player in this market. Its data center arm, Tata Communications, reportedly operates around 22 data centers in 16 markets across five countries: India, the UK, Singapore, Portugal, and the US.

In July, it was reported that the company had acquired land parcels in southern and western India for data centers that could be used by OpenAI.
