Data center firm Vantage has signed a deal with Heron Power, a US solid-state transformer manufacturer, to secure more than 1GW of its SSTs for deployment across its hyperscale data center portfolio.

The agreement is expected to support Vantage's plan to deploy 800 VDC racks across its portfolio. According to Heron, its Heron Link SST is designed to address the challenges of AI racks, which have much higher densities and more variable loads. It does so by using integrated energy storage, reducing conversion stages, and simplifying the path from the grid to the rack.

The companies say the agreement will enable faster time to power and greater efficiency. Heron Link targets efficiency of more than 98.5 percent from medium voltage to 800 VDC. The companies also cite lower infrastructure requirements and greater energy flexibility.

According to Heron, the Heron Link is a 5MW modular megawatt power converter built on the latest advances in wide-bandgap semiconductors. The company says the product is designed for high power density and ease of maintenance, offering greater reliability and lower costs for renewable energy storage and data center developers.

"Our customers need a faster and more efficient way to deploy increasingly power-dense and flexible AI infrastructure," said Curtis Aubry, vice president, global product strategy at Vantage. "By simplifying the electrical architecture and integrating power conversion, energy storage and compute more effectively, we can help reduce deployment complexity, improve efficiency and accelerate our customers' speed to capacity."

"Heron was founded to modernize electrical infrastructure and enable an electrified economy," added Drew Baglino, founder and CEO of Heron Power. "By partnering with Vantage to deploy more than a gigawatt of Heron Links in data centers, we will move 800 VDC from a reference architecture concept to a repeatable, deployed platform, delivering power from grid to rack in an integrated system."

Heron Power was founded in 2024 by former Tesla senior executive Drew Baglino and is based in Scotts Valley, California. In August, the company announced Morgan Hill, California, as the site of its first large-scale factory. When operational, the factory is expected to manufacture up to 10,000 Heron Links every year, representing 40GW on an annual basis.

The factory selection followed the close of Heron's Series B funding round earlier this year, in which the company raised $140 million, bringing its total funding to date to $183 million. It closed its Series A funding round last May.

The company has already partnered with data center firms to deploy its solution. Last June, Heron signed a Letter of Intent (LOI) with Crusoe to supply power converter technology for the Stargate data center campus in Texas.
