Baker Electric is expanding its substation capabilities as data center development, electrification, renewable generation and battery storage drive unprecedented demand for power infrastructure across the United States.
The rapid growth of hyperscale computing, artificial intelligence and other high-density data center applications is reshaping how owners, developers and utilities approach power infrastructure. Baker's recent market analysis identifies data centers as a major contributor to projected U.S. peak-load growth through 2030, with power availability, utility coordination and substations emerging as increasingly important factors in site selection and project viability.
As demand accelerates, the challenge extends beyond construction alone. The critical issue is securing, distributing, managing and reliably delivering the power required to operate these facilities—a shift that has created growing demand for substations, medium- and high-voltage distribution, battery energy storage systems, renewable generation and associated controls.
Effective immediately, Baker Electric now supports full-lifecycle substation delivery from early planning and constructability coordination through construction, commissioning and energization. Capabilities include physical substation design, protection and control systems, and procurement and installation of transmission and distribution equipment such as transformers, reactors, switchgear, capacitors, control buildings and load banks.
By bringing together electrical, energy and technology expertise under one coordinated team, Baker aims to reduce handoffs, manage risk earlier, improve accountability and deliver more seamless project outcomes from planning through energization.

Construction is currently underway on the Janus project, a 96 MVA substation supporting 80 megawatts of solar generation and 80 megawatts of battery energy storage. The project brings together Baker Construction, Battery Energy Storage, Special Projects, Utility Solar and Systems Technology divisions, along with Baker's Civil Partner, through shared planning and coordinated execution.
