Liquid cooling is emerging as a necessary response to rising data center temperatures driven by growing artificial intelligence workloads. While air cooling has traditionally been the standard approach for managing server rack temperatures, it is becoming insufficient as computational demands accelerate.

According to a recently released report from JLL, liquid cooling delivers significant advantages through improved power efficiency. The technology reduces energy consumption substantially while generating considerable cost savings for operators.

Several major industry players have already begun deploying liquid cooling at scale. Equinix, a leading data center operator, has implemented the technology across its 100-plus global facilities. Digital Realty has introduced a high-density colocation offering powered by liquid cooling, capable of supporting workloads up to 70 kilowatts per rack. Nvidia has also entered the space, providing next-generation servers specifically designed to leverage liquid cooling to manage the heat produced by CPUs and GPUs.

Beyond energy efficiency, liquid cooling offers substantial operational advantages. The reduced need for traditional air-cooling infrastructure and its associated space-consuming equipment frees valuable floor space for additional data hall capacity. Liquid cooling systems also require lower floor-to-ceiling heights, further optimizing facility footprint and utilization.

However, the transition to liquid cooling presents significant challenges. The technology requires a fundamental overhaul of existing data center infrastructure and design—a particularly demanding undertaking for operators managing older facilities. Retrofitting existing installations to incorporate liquid cooling can encounter infrastructure and power constraints that limit feasibility. Operators must also carefully evaluate how changes to the data center environment might negatively impact service levels in other data halls. Additionally, the risk of premature obsolescence remains as the technology continues to evolve, creating uncertainty around long-term capital investments.
