Google, Microsoft, and Nvidia jointly endorse 800V DC electrical standard for data center power distribution.
Google, Microsoft, and Nvidia are collaborating through the Open Compute Project (OCP) to establish 800-volt direct current (800VDC) as an open standard for powering next-generation high-density AI data centers. The three companies are working with the broader OCP ecosystem to define common requirements covering power conversion, power quality, system interfaces, and safety.
The shift addresses a critical infrastructure challenge: AI accelerators deployed in increasingly dense configurations drive power consumption per rack to levels that traditional low-voltage AC distribution struggles to handle. Existing infrastructure cannot meet the power demands of modern GPUs.
The technical case for 800VDC is compelling. DC systems require only two wires compared to four for alternating current (AC), delivering substantial wiring savings. Higher voltage also means lower current, which reduces heat generation—enabling data centers running on 800VDC to operate significantly cooler while consuming less power.
The financial impact is substantial. 800VDC adoption could yield a 50% to 80% reduction in copper usage and an 8% to 12% reduction in annual energy-related operating expenses through lower conversion and distribution losses. AI-first facilities can realize $4 million to $8 million in capital expenditure savings per 10 MW of capacity by reducing upstream AC infrastructure. For a one-gigawatt data center, that represents savings of several million pounds of copper wire.
The industry has converged on 800VDC because it delivers the same power at lower current, reducing conductor infrastructure requirements compared to lower-voltage systems. Google, Microsoft, and Nvidia began presenting their work through OCP in 2025. The effort has since progressed beyond demonstrating technical feasibility toward establishing specifications adoptable throughout the data-center supply chain.
The companies have initiated an OCP workstream focused on converting medium-voltage AC power directly to 800VDC, while aligning requirements for power quality, power smoothing, and end-to-end system interfaces. An open standard could reshape the power equipment market. Rather than designing separate systems for each major customer, manufacturers could build equipment to a common specification, similar to server manufacturing.
This effort represents more than a voltage change—it is an attempt to establish a common electrical foundation for AI factories before increasingly dense systems force every hyperscaler and equipment supplier to develop proprietary solutions.
Amazon Web Services (AWS) is notably absent. It has made no commitment to 800VDC and has not announced its own plans, despite mounting pressure as power density increases. However, Amazon is aggressively redesigning its AI data centers for higher-density systems. Its internal "Titus" initiative is reportedly focused on next-generation infrastructure capable of supporting Nvidia GB200-class systems and future Vera Rubin hardware while increasing data center capacity and improving power and cooling efficiency—though whether this signals a different power standard remains unclear.
