Google secures planning approval to expand its data center facility in Dublin, Ireland.

Google has received planning approval from An Coimisiún Pleanála to expand its data center at Grange Castle Business Park in Dublin, Ireland, ending a lengthy dispute with South Dublin County Council. The expansion, covering 72,400 sqm (779,310 sq ft), will create the third data center building on the company's existing campus.

Google initially sought permission for the project in June 2024 but was denied that August. The council cited "insufficient capacity in the electricity network and the lack of significant on-site renewable energy" as reasons for refusal. The decision also reflected concerns about the clarity of Google's Power Purchase Agreements in Ireland and the absence of a connection to the surrounding district heating network.

The approval came through an appeal to An Bord Pleanála, now An Coimisiún Pleanála, filed after the initial rejection. Google's appeal noted that it had secured the necessary grid connection in 2021. The application proceeded despite a de facto moratorium imposed by state-owned grid operator EirGrid, which had stated it would not grant new data center applications until 2028.

The approval carries conditions requiring Google to demonstrate power purchase agreements before construction begins, use renewable fuel for backup generators, and implement measures to encourage staff to use public transport, cycle, or walk to work. The company must also improve the ecological value of the site.

"Data centers are an essential part of Ireland's ambitious digital economy, and we want to support that," a Google spokesperson said. "We are grateful that An Coimisiún Pleanála has approved Google Ireland's appeal and look forward to the next steps as we continue to invest in our infrastructure in the country to meet the growing demand for our services."

Google has operated data centers at Grange Castle since 2012, having converted a warehouse there in 2011 and secured permission for a second facility in 2014. The company has previously invested approximately €500 million ($535.3m) at the site.
