GE Vernova AI power boom faces profitability test on margin and scaling challenges.
Two years after its spinoff from General Electric, GE Vernova has emerged as a critical infrastructure player in the AI buildout. The company makes the turbines, grid equipment, and nuclear technology that power AI data centers—not the chips or software that often capture headlines. With stock up roughly 55% this year, GE Vernova has earned its place on growth-focused watchlists.
Q2 2026 results, reported July 22, painted a picture of strong momentum tempered by execution challenges. Revenue rose 22% year-over-year to $11.1 billion, beating Wall Street's $10.79 billion consensus. Orders surged 88% organically to $24.2 billion, pushing the company's backlog to $176 billion—up $13 billion in three months alone. Management targets $200 billion in backlog by 2027. Gas turbine capacity reserved for slot allocations climbed from 100 to 116 gigawatts in the quarter, with expectations to reach at least 125 gigawatts by year-end.
The weakness appeared further down the income statement. Adjusted earnings per share landed well below the $3.17 analysts expected. Net income rose to $649 million, or $2.47 per diluted share, from $492 million, or $1.86 per share, year-over-year—solid growth on the surface, but below guidance. Adjusted EBITDA grew 62% year-over-year to $1.25 billion with margins expanding 340 basis points to 11.2%, falling short of Street expectations. The disconnect stems from equipment revenue in electrification and power growing faster than higher-margin services. The power segment posted orders up 134% organically to $16.7 billion, with revenue climbing 14% to $5.5 billion. Electrification orders surged 66% to $6.3 billion. Wind orders, however, dropped 40% organically to $1.2 billion.
GE Vernova is growing faster than expected but converting that growth into profit more slowly. One bright spot: free cash flow hit $5.1 billion in Q2 alone—more than all of 2025's total—driven by customers making substantial upfront deposits to reserve turbine slots. Cash on hand reached $13.1 billion, up $4.3 billion year-to-date. Management returned $3.9 billion to shareholders this year through buybacks and a 50-cent quarterly dividend (0.2% yield) while raising full-year revenue guidance to $45.5–$46.5 billion and free cash flow guidance to $11.5–$12.5 billion.
Cracks remain. Wind operations posted a $275 million EBITDA loss in the quarter and are expected to lose nearly $400 million for the full year, pressured by weak U.S. onshore demand, permitting delays, and tariffs. Management has guided to a net tariff impact of $250–$350 million across the company in 2026—a cost already baked into guidance but a meaningful margin hit.
Valuation poses a second concern. At a trailing price-to-earnings ratio near 30, GE Vernova trades well above levels value investors typically target. That premium may prove difficult to sustain if profitability margins remain under pressure.
GE Vernova competes in a crowded field: NuScale Power in nuclear, traditional rivals Siemens Energy and Vestas Wind Systems for global turbine share, and Eaton in electrification and grid equipment—one of GE Vernova's fastest-growing segments.
Analyst consensus remains constructive: a Moderate Buy rating split among two Strong Buys, 22 Buys, five Holds, and one Sell across 30 analysts. The average 12-month price target stands at $1,133, implying roughly 10% upside from current levels near $1,042, though targets range from $580 to $1,450.
GE Vernova remains a legitimate way to gain exposure to the electricity demands of artificial intelligence, backed by a record backlog and accelerating cash generation. However, this is a premium-priced growth story, not a value proposition. Wind losses, tariff headwinds, and rich valuation leave little room for error. Revenue growth appears secure; profitability expansion is far less certain.
