GE Vernova and Blue Energy target a 2.5 GW combined gas-nuclear facility in Texas with investment decision expected in 2027.
Blue Energy and GE Vernova Hitachi Nuclear Energy have agreed to advance development of a proposed 2.5-gigawatt gas-and-nuclear power facility in Victoria, Texas. The agreement encompasses engineering design, regulatory licensing, and safety analysis necessary to progress the project toward a construction decision, with a final investment decision targeted for 2027.
The facility would integrate GE Vernova's 7HA.02 gas turbines with GE Vernova Hitachi's BWRX-300 small modular reactor technology, enabling Blue Energy to establish large-scale power generation to meet growing electricity demands across Texas.
The project is structured in phases. The first phase will deploy two GE Vernova gas turbines to provide approximately 1 gigawatt of electricity, expected to begin supplying a nearby data center starting in 2030. Blue Energy will subsequently introduce nuclear capacity, targeting the addition of approximately 1.5 gigawatts of nuclear generation beginning in 2032, potentially comprised of up to five BWRX-300 small modular reactors.
Blue Energy CEO Jake Jurewicz said the agreement allows the company to "confidently move forward to build our nuclear energy production line." Eric Gray, CEO of GE Vernova's Power segment, emphasized that the collaboration "combines GE Vernova's flagship HA gas turbine technology with GE Vernova Hitachi's advanced nuclear SMR technology."
The phased approach allows electricity generation to begin through gas capacity before nuclear units come online as they are completed. This strategy builds on progress with BWRX-300 technology already underway in North America, with the first unit under construction at Ontario Power Generation's Darlington site in Canada. That reactor is expected to be completed by decade's end, potentially serving as a reference project for subsequent BWRX-300 deployments worldwide.
The Victoria project responds to rapidly expanding data center infrastructure driving sustained demand for reliable electricity across the United States. With the 2027 investment decision target in place, the development will now focus on completing the engineering, licensing, and safety analyses required to determine whether the project advances to construction.
