Google plans to deploy $15B toward building an artificial intelligence hub in Visakhapatnam, India.

Google India’s vice-president and country manager, Preeti Lobana, has stated that compute capacity functions as the backbone of today’s artificial intelligence era, much like power grids drove the industrial revolution. On August 24, 2026, she detailed the company’s strategic expansion in India, emphasizing that robust infrastructure is essential to scaling AI adoption nationwide.

Central to this effort is Google’s $15 billion investment in a 1-gigawatt AI data center hub in Visakhapatnam. The project supports India’s broader ambition to build a $1 trillion digital economy. According to Lobana, enhanced compute capabilities will accelerate AI-driven economic growth while ensuring these technologies reach a significantly larger segment of the population.

Demonstrating real-world impact, Lobana highlighted Tata Steel’s rollout of 300 AI agents over a nine-month period and praised the growing ecosystem of startups emerging in smaller cities. To further broaden accessibility, Google is optimizing Gemini Live—which currently supports 25 Indian languages—and digitizing local dialects. This initiative ensures that diverse user groups, from small business owners to industrial workers, can effectively leverage AI tools.

“You can use AI to upskill people much faster and scale better than you could pre-AI, but it's also about how to use AI to be far more productive and effective,” Lobana said.
